himalayan rock salt

We're trialling no longer orf vaccinating some lambs this year. Because orf is a risk I'm going to put out rock salt for the lambs. I tried the Frobuts from DB in the past but worked out they were costing more than the vaccine did.

Where do you people get rock salt from. Ideally looking for bigger lumps so probably best to buy a bulk bag.

Have been putting chelated rockies out for the sheep in the belief that it would amongst other things help with orf, neighbour says no good needs to be himalayan rock salt, is that right ?

Adam’s lump salt is considerably cheaper than that coming from Hereford.;) Having had some from each in the past, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of difference.

Same old story "you get what you pay for" its the minerals in the Himalayan Red Salt that makes the difference.
There is salt, and then there is salt.
There is a Premium Red Himalayan Salt. 84+ natural minerals essential to all life, try Seamill SaltWorks (Red)

Does the rock salt only help to prevent orf? Or will it clear up some mild cases of orf on lambs?

Sheep should have access to Mineral Salts it at all times, 24/7 / 365, which allows them to get their required quantities of essential nutrients promoting their health and immunity and protecting your investment.

What way do you all put salt out to sheep? I put a few pieces out in lick buckets at one time but they didn’t last long with the rain. It would need to be in a container of some sort with a lid over it I suppose?

If you get the Red Himalayan Lumps (Rock Hard)18-25kg or smaller, put them in a field or on the hill even in the rain, they will not turn to mush. The Salt holds the water covering the lumps until it is licked off. You can get a 5mm size in 25kg bags. Free feeding or mixing works excellent. Shepherdess we know in the Borders takes a 25kg bag. Once a month on her Gator onto the hills, put 5-6 handfuls move on 20 yards 5-6 more, moves on, the sheep know what she is doing and they hover the salt, she also mixes in grass seed with the salt. Can you provide an analysis of the trace element content of Himalayan Red Salt, provided by a reputable independent analyst.

I was once naïve enough to assume that ordinary rock salt would contain at least some essential trace elements, but was disappointed to find that it doesn't. It is 98% NaCl with the remainder containing traces of K, Mg and Ca. But there were no detectable trace elements

Why is Himalayan Red Salt any different.

And one danger of feeding salt to lambs is that they can transfer traces of salt to the ewes' teats, which in turn can cause chafing and discomfort. making the ewes reluctant to let the lambs suck.

I stopped vaxing lambs at day old maybe 10 years ago have far less udder issues (still do ewes pre lambing though) block salt and himalayan no difference really , fed in upturned steel wheel rims to keep them off muddy floor and allows to drain (cocci) , lambs tend to get a mild challenge in summer but gone in few weeks .

They have Lumps up to 25kg.
Himalayan Red Agricultural Food Grade Mineral Salts
Also Certified Organic.

Himalayas rock salt would need to be consumed in lethal quantities to provide a sheep with its trace element requirements.
Snake oil /snake salt.
Good well managed land provides everything and a soil test will tell you what needs to be done.... Combine with a blood test and for 50 quid you know. If they're short on a trace element bolus them or drench or heaven forbid a mineral bucket.
You can get ag salt cheaper than lime a small amount in pasture helps - salt is moorish to sheep just like molasses hence them seeming exited for it. They don't need it they just want it... Like I want salty crisps or bacon after 4 pints. I don't need it mind.
