Hip replacement- anyone had it done?

Just tap a few grease nipples into hip and knee joints and give squirt now and then?
Sounds crazy but maybe not that daft these days with special silicone free gels etc.?

You would need some kind of biologically inert material and a way of ensuring it doesnt get attacked/eaten/dissolved away.

A plastic or similar liner that could be placed over bones to protect them from the wear (as cartilage is supposed to) would be good but again needs to meet the above criteria. Breast implants for example are inert but arent designed to be abraded or squashed or given any grief.

man over the road here got it done, says it was great, but when dad inquired about it instead of a hip they said it wouldn't suit him, cant remember why possible too much wear both sides of joint. however he is too young to get a new hip as he might outlast it.

then a man at work got a hip a few years ago-15? not sure. anyway the stump into the bone came loose and he is getting it repaired now. it was new type of joint but the man had hip trouble all his life so his hip part is probly a lot better now then his early model.

granda got a proper stainless hip replacement in his 50-60, died at 90ish and I never remember him complain about his hips and he gave them a good workout and abuse.

Same here so interested to see folks thoughts.
Had a THR on my left at 39 and now the rights knackered due to compensating.

Would‘nt mind telling us about it would you? I’m 42, knackered hips run in the family and mine are giving me grief. Painkillers don’t touch it and at night it feels as though someone is pulling on my legs. Very sore after doing a lot of clutch work even if it’s a light pedal.

You can have a hip replaced at any age: the newer ones they use have a modular build so certain parts can be easily replaced without having to take the lengthy part out of your femur (which is the more involved part of the op). Even if you wear one out they can be replaced totally or in part. Knees are the same. I have had hold of actual (demonstrators) replacement joints for knees and hips and had them to pieces to look at them. Actually heavier than you think but no more so than the originals.

It is possible to have two joints replaced at the same time but they aren't keen on doing it. Physio will be needed after the operation and is absolutely key to recovery. You should be pain free from that joint as soon as you wake up and most people are able to do whatever they want in life once again.

I saw a consultant and am now booked in for the Andy Murray job at the end of winter. He's done loads of them and said I fiited the profile for that type perfectly. They don't recommend it for older people as it can weaken the elbow at the top of the femur and cause the bone to break, which is why it's indicated for slightly younger patients who have good bones. Range of movement is said to be better than standard THR. Also it gives the surgeon somewhere to go if another replacement is needed eventually as a lot less of the bone has been done away with to start with.

Wouldn`t argue with that, not to be confused with an NHS referral to a Private hospital for the operation though.
It`s actually "cheaper" for the NHS to refer work out than pay the CCG "fines" for missing targets, and its probably the same consultant doing the operation! The bonkers world in which we live!
I had a hernia repair a couple of years ago in a private hospital, (referral from NHS, the only waiting time was the NHS approving the cost....took around three months.

Had a THR done 3 years ago . Was up walking within 12 hours , done end of May and climbed to top of Vesuvius that October . Ceramic ball on titanium joint , was told it should last 30 years if looked after but if need be can change the ball and socket easy enough . Great result for me with constant pain all disappeared instantly . Don't push it for the first few weeks to let muscle heal properly
Only downside is I get stopped every time at airport scanner

The clue is there to look after it. Contrary to opinions revising a hip replacement is not an easy procedure. Longer operation, more infections, dislocations and may need bone grafting. That is why not all surgeons will take it on.

Me - 2004 both hips minimal invasive resurfaced one week apart.
Mother - both total replacements about 1977 and 1980? - died with them still intact 2009. She walked a lot and was always slim.
Both of us fell and falling apart from other things!

The type of replacement I have is a mesh type arm that the bone grew in to so that it should last my lifetime , the ball and socket can be replaced with "minimal" disturbance if need be , it is possible to shatter the ceramic but very rare I was told . Sometimes I can hear a noise from the joint and the nurse warned me about that as it happens while having sex although not every time , common complaint apparently
