Anyone hire out machines? I have a plan to start hiring out some machines, some farming based and some plant/access based, anyone have some good advice? It will be strictly account holders only and will also offer to go through local buying group which will ensure prompt payment with a bit of discount. I will mainly aiming at farming market first and then see where it goes from there.

Having seen the state of a month old mini digger I got from Jewson ,I wouldn't bother .
Brand new machine went on a month's hire to one job and it looked liked they porpously set out to destroy it .
Back end scabbed to hell ,they put tree branches through the engine grills ,smashed the work light off and never put a grease gun near it .
I thought it was an old machine

Become a member cpa and hire out at their terms and conditions with a signed hire contract stating the rules over and above the cpa

I have about 20 items I hire out, a mixture of diggers with various attachments, farm implements, compact machinery and a cherry picker.

To do it legitimately is a total minefield. H&S, having the correct tickets and paying for damage is a PITA which is why I only hire to people I know personally.

It’s almost inevitable that if someone unknown has a machine, they damage, won’t pay, misuse and generally play up.

MAKE SURE ALL MACHINES HAVE TRACKERS

Get a £1000 up front deposit or similar credit card style deposit. Then THEY argue to get THEiR money back not you pleading for them to take your calls…..

Make sure the hirers have insurance either through liability or separate plant cover .

I’m just doing the same now but ag only. I’ve got Agri Advisor writing up hire contracts and nothing will leave the yard without being signed for.

What is the matter with folk ??
They wouldn't want their property trashed ,why do it to others
,whats happened to treat others (or their property) How you would wish to be treated yourself.
If I hire anything , or help neighbour out I always treat kit as if its mine and look after it.
Can't understand scroats who dont give a sh!t , they need flogging.
Drove a brand new 50 hour kubota hire tractor at harvest, couldn't believe or understand how the main instrument display had what looked like a bullet bullseye in it .how ???? Makes my blood boil. f**king people are a pain in the arse,

I've hired machines from the local self drive hire place. A few times having them as either the second hirer or under 100 hours, they looked like they have been been found under a rubble heap.

Unless it was someone I knew, I wouldn't do self drive hire.... I'd end up being arrested for some kind of violence fairly quickly 😂😂.

Been asked numerous time for use of/rent out bits of equipment. only ever lend to the odd one or two. Rather go do the job than have to fix everything that got broke Even if it’s only covers the fuel. Heard the saying dont be gentle its a rental too many times to expect much else.

Every bit of hired in plant my main customer hires has pictures taken on all four sides in our presence.any issues are documented on the paperwork and then we sign for it.cleaning charge seems pretty standard despite sending stuff back in reasonably clean order.I’d personally never lend or hire anything to anyone.I’ve had nearly new machines that have untold damage.

Thank you the comments, it’s obviously a go with your eyes wide open type of business. I have a couple of sheds to take down and three to put up and ongoing maintenance of other building as well, all of which I would need a cherry picker for, I’ve been thinking about this for a couple of years! Would be just a few things first cherry picker and scissor lift as I can see a market for these with just local farms. Might do a bit of agri gear, have a dump trailer which I’ve rented out a few times over the years.

Scissor lift will all need to be fully tested, an old dump trailer you should be fine,

I leant my tipper to a close neighbour after repainting it all, they took some scrap in and put a fairly large scratch down side when loading it,it’s not a new trailer so to be fair I would not have been to fussed had they confessed but sending it back no word is just wankey, I won’t lend them it again .
