HMRC Self Employed Grant Scheme

Thanks for reply.

Just got an email half an hour ago to say one of our partners claim was rejected because they fear it may have been applied for by someone else.

Speaking to accountant today, who said he believed their system was rejecting a number of separate applications made from the same computer as possibly fraudulent. This one was made over the phone, with me and the partner present, who confirmed for security, though I handled most of the details.

According to him, those rejected can reapply from tomorrow. Another hour and a half on the phone repeating the same thing then.?
Got the same email here tonight. That was on a phone applied claim as well . Same as you i had the partner confirming details and i did most of the application. That was 2 week ago and thought it was taking a while for the money to come through. That will be another phone call to them.

Exactly.

They passed it at the time, told us the amount etc, and then nothing until email this evening.

I suspect it's because there are three claims using one farm business email address as the point of contact. Which there's nothing at all wrong with of course. Silly beggars.

I would expect almost all claims for a family partnership would have been made from the same computer, all giving the same bank account details, and all made by whoever in the partnership has more than one brain cell (or even their accountant, using the farm computer).

HMRC would make life easier for families if they could identify a distinct type of ''family partnership'', as opposed to ''business partnerships''. A good example is when I pay the income tax of all four family partners. I can't just send one cheque to cover the total, I have to send four separate checks, in four separate envelopes, using four very scarce and expensive stamps. The barstewards.

Agreed. I've made each one of those points myself, some of them just this evening to the missus.

When I took over that part of the work from dad, I sent one cheque for us all. Of course didn't we get two red letters, and one stating a gross overpayment. These are the genii administering her majesty's taxation system. ??‍♂️

Learnt my lesson though. Took a bit of breaking it down for them before they could understand what was wrong and how to fix it. ?

I have now found my rejection email. It seems like the personal touch is useless.
Good point about payment of tax, I pay three different tax demands to three different HMRC accounts from one bank account, the same one that I wanted payment into for siess.
Yet they think they maybe paying someone else?
I think now the window has closed for new applications they want something for the staff to do!

Pay by BACs . It saves a lot of time and cost

I’ve always paid tax and every other bill no problem via BACs

Just got all my year end stuff together for accountant.
Used to be 3 cheque books worth of stubs to hand in.
Have written two cheques in the past year. Both to same person. One for cutting hedges, the other for roadside verges.

HMRC get theirs as late as possible. Much easier to do by BACS than with cheque and stamp;)

I've never seen the bank stopping a Bacs. Unless it's clearly got an extra digit and there isn't enough money in the account, which hasn't happened thankfully. But they could in theory stop a large card payment if it looked strange. Would also be inclined to think that their system will recognize certain account numbers, like accounts with the same bank, and popular government accounts like Cumbernauld and Shipley etc

I read somewhere recently that the next fraud/accident prevention step is to validate and report back the payee account name whilst preparing the bacs. Not 100%, but something.

Yes HSBC are doing that soon .

Already happening on HSBC Business Banking here. It's a great idea and should really help on the fraud angle.

It does make for a bit more of a faff when paying new people though - you either get a "Full match" which is good, or a "Partial Match" which then leads to a confirmation box almost requiring you to accept responsibility for the payment if something isn't right.

Would there be anything to stop a Nigerian titling their account hmrc?

I tend to confirm the amounts and the destination account number each time with my accountant.

Our bank is advising us to check these things out with the payee, where they are a private business. So, when you receive an email payment request, ring up and confirm the details over the phone, or text or WhatsApp them. Any way you can to break the chain which a fraudster could have hacked into.

If a Nigerian (or anyone in fact!) tried to do that in the UK the bank would require two forms of ID detailing your name as HMRC.

If as I suspect your question alludes to whether other countries take matters so seriously when setting up bank accounts....I wouldn't know.

Seen that on hsbc, on setting up a new payee, the bank tell you the name they associate with the details you are using

Doesnt quite match as your limited to 19 character long names, they use the full title, however long but you can still force it through

Found a way round that.....when it doesn’t quite match, if you click edit, you then have something like 140 characters of space available.
