Hogg feeders

I’m toying with the idea of getting a Hogg feeder. Which is the best one, from the Walter Watson and the Portequip?

10’ Portequip quoted at £775 and holds 750kg.
10’ Watson quoted at £865 and holds 1250kg.

Both local delivered prices.

Won't take many extra fills to use that 100 quid you save.
Depends how much you will use it and how many you're feeding, but I'd almost always go for the bigger one to save filling it so much.

Can't comment on build quality or anything as I don't use them. Probably don't make them like they used to

I spoke to him. He can’t deliver and I doubt I could hire a trailer and get there and back for the difference.

If you do decide to hire, This chap https://www.shropshiretrailerhire.uk/ is competitive and really helpful. I hired a big low loader IW to collect a calf/weaner creep feeder from near Oxford from him over the winter. Possibly a few miles out of your way though...

Thank you but I hired a 14’ IW from Phil’s Tool Hire in Welshpool to fetch a fert spreader a few weeks ago, for £30/day.

I know they’d be handy to have sometimes, but for occasional use, you could hire one for a lot of days for the cost of buying.

This hogg feeder holds 1250kg, and was £1200 from teme valley tractors in Knighton. Quality is fantastic, got one thats 7 years old, and no rust on it whatsoever. Its handy to have a axle on it, to move it onto fresh ground. And can be towed empty with a pick up.

Is the trough a bit high...do you need to dig the wheels in a bit to make it lower

The trough bit is at a perfect height, any size lamb or hogg over 25kg can easily get stuck into the feed.

When I spoke to Teme Valley they didn’t seem keen on getting a 10’ one for me, just 8’, which would do less sheep and be a pain to fill with a 7’6” telehandler bucket.

I had a good look at a Portequip in Wynnstay’s yard yesterday, as well as a Watson in Charlie’s. i’d Say there was nothing in it as far as build quality/weight was concerned.

I’ve since slapped myself round the face and come to my senses. Grass growing well on my lower, offlying block so i’ll Take the hoggs down there after the weekend and start rotating.

A flatbed is one of the best things you can buy its surprising how often you use them and if you buy a new one it'll hardly lose any money

Agreed me and my brother share a 16ft tri axle bought new in 2012 just had its first 6 tyres so it doesn’t get that much use but it has moved everything from garden sheds to hot tubs to hay and straw, roof trusses, tractors, fertiliser, mini diggers, neighbours cow that had gone down ratchet strapped flat to the bed on its side etc etc etc.
