If you do hang out around Calgary I'd be happy to ask work if we can manage a small tour for you. It's a 30,000 t cement elevator only about half an hour north of Calgary.

I guess I've got to go to Canada in the next year or two, will fly to Vancouver, go to Vancouver Island, then drive from Vancouver going east, catch up with relations in Chiliwack, then to Calgary then up to Red Deer, then back to Vancouver. (y):D...well thats the plan.

Planning on going to Canada this summer for 2-3 weeks on holiday. original plan was to fly to Vancouver, spend a few days on Vancouver Island and then head to the Rockies.

Now considering dropping the Vancouver region to save money and just flying in and out of Calgary and doing the Rockies.

What are people's thoughts and what does everybody recommend?

Cheers
Hi,
I would recommend the Icefield Parkway drive from Banff to Jasper - plus if you intend visiting
the Niagara Falls - take one of the helicopter flights over the Falls.

mrs and i had a month in canada july/aug last yr. used canadian affair for flights and car hire. glasgow to vancouver in one hit-9hrs- ok. 3 nights in vancouver. used the sky train from the airport to downtown vancouver. the hop on/off bus tours are a good way to see the city. be sure to go up the lookout tower, great views. picked up our hire car from hertz , a 3000km vw bora, we put 7000km on to it by the time we got to toronto airport.
the rockies and the national parks fantastic, drumheller for the dinosaurs, medicine hat, regina all good on the western side. saw a few cattle some excellent spring crops and some poor ones.scrap not worth much over there as a lot of roadside small farms seem to be stocking a lot of old cars/machinery. tractors mostly case/jd a few nh and very few mf. most of our accommodation booked via booking.com , ok. saux-ste-marie a nice place likewise huntsville. spent our last 5 nights with rellies in london ontario then 2hr drive to toronto airport. great country for a trip, driving easy doing 250/300 mls per day with plenty of stops. do your research and stop a couple of days in the interesting places and feast your eyes on the wide variety of scenery. friendly folk always willing to help especially if you are a scot. we had 1 day rainy and 1 dull one otherwise sun with 24-34 degs..
absolutely fantastic. i had my 70th birthday over there so anybody can do it. :):)

I have relatives in Nova Scotia and go out there every now and then. It is a great country. Like others have said you cannot over estimate the distance. The flight from Halifax NS to Vancouver is longer than Heathrow to Halifax.

I felt it was a waste of time going to see the falls, but I suppose if I hadn't gone I would have thought I had missed something, the cn tower was much better
yeah this.
I was a bit disappointed in the falls tbh honest, I loved toronto its really clean and a nice place but as with all cities two days is enough . We then went to ottawa which is well worth a visit as it has the parliment buildings etc.

Ontario round Georgian bay is very nice, Bruce peninsula lovely, also lots of farming in that area, not prarie farming either. Bit like Europe really. I wasn't that impressed with Niagara falls, but nice wineries in the near Niagara area, try ice wine, nom nom nom!

Almost all the other cities and larger towns were nicer than Toronto , in general west of the prairies was nicer

When we visited The Falls we stayed the night in a hotel just across the road, about twenty floors up. Full length glass on the room, floor to ceiling. You could feel the thunder of the water vibrating the glass and hear the roar all night. They light the falls up at night too. I just kept the curtains open a foot wide all night and kept waking up for another look! I loved it there.

We visited Toronto, CN Tower was good, loved the glass floor.

Took a drive to a Mennonite town, tried not to stare at their fascinating way of life.

We drove up to Algonquin Park, last week of October. Fantastic sight.

Just before we left my uncle gave us a map of Ontario about 5 ft square. He put dots on the places we had visited. Despite covering nearly 2000 Kms in 12 days we had covered a patch not much bigger than my footprint on the map! And that was just Ontario!

Fantastic place. Definitely on my list to revisit.

Also , forgot to add, if you fly back direct from Vancouver on a night flight , you're almost certainly going over or nearly over the North Pole . The stewardesses will surely bitch at you for opening the port hole blinds , but do it anyway , the sight of that wilderness of ice shining in the dawn light is overwhelming , don't be put off but do it quietly so as not to disturb the other passengers .

We did Vancouver then hire car through Okanagan Valley, Banff, Jasper, Icefield Parkway, Calgary etc etc and back up to Whistler and returned from Vancouver. 2.1/2 weeks overnighting in B&B or Holiday Inn, motels etc. White water rafting on the mighty Fraser one of the highlights. One of the best holidays we've had.

If anyone is going to Edmonton from Calgary I'd recommend the loop up the Icefields Parkway. Go to Canmore on Highway 1A instead of the trans Canada then go up the Icefields Parkway from Banff. Stop and see Lake Louise as well as the Columbia glacier and Athabasca Falls. End up at Jasper where you can see things like Maligne Canyon which is wonderful. Then you can take Highway 16 straight into Edmonton - conveniently on the west side with the mall. Then a simple Highway 2 back down to Calgary. Or you can zig zag around while you got back south.

Lists of things to do in Banff and Lake Louise include Lake Minnewanka boat tours, Banff Trail Riders which will take you on guided horseback trips from an hour long to 6 days, Johnson Canyon and the Ink Pots, the Cave and Basin, the hot springs, Bow Falls, the Gondola, Morraine Lake and the Valley of the Ten Peaks, Brewster Tours which is horseback trips around Lake Louise.

I live in Central Alberta so I'm right around that area for anyone that might be interested in more off road stuff than typical tourist sites. Smaller rodeos, local auctions to see auctioneers in action, local sites like Buffalo Jumps, badlands, etc.
