Home applying manganese to barley/wheat

ok...how do i apply manganese to seed....its not common here so buying it is not an option...plus i only want to aplly to seed i use...so if season allows early sowing i dont need to use all of seed as i will keep the amount needed for very late sowing...

Can i apply when running grain through some pencil augers etc?

Do i buy sulphate and dislove then spray on?

There's a product called wolftrax which as far as I can see is mn sulphate. It's a powder and can be added to a sprayer and sprayed like any other mn or acording to the brochure it can be used as a powder to coat seed or fertiliser.

I'd love to know how best to mix it with seed because it's a fraction of the cost of mn treated seed.

As above auger, nozzle, calculator, scales. Simple

No your probably right and that's the logical 2ay to do it but I'm sure when I had the leaflet it said powder coating of seed and fertiliser. I've been looking for it online but I can't find it anywhere.

I have bought manganese coated seed before now and looks as though somebody just trickled some manganese sulphate powder into the auger with the seed. I wouldn't think it would matter if you overdosed as long as it doesn't get to the point where it clogs the drill. It certainly slows seed flow in my drill and seems to grind the metering rollers. It has a short term effect in the crop in my experience, and still needed a foliar spray. The foliar spray worked best when supplemented with Ammoium nitrate in the tank at 2kg per ha in 200 litres of water.

But nothing quite beats better consolidation or minimal disturbance of the seedbed in the first place. Loose seedbeds are a manganese disaster here on sand, however much manganese you apply.

Im not on sandy soil and seed bed mostly stays tightish....id like to get the plants through to 5 leaf or so so i can include herbicide in foliar spray....might not be possible...i am using contractor for spraying and there not enough money in these low prices to make it pay if crop is light...and this year mine is...it might go 4tha...my target is 5 with an undersown crop...dont think we have the seasons to producing 10 tonne spring barley crops....

Doesn't manganese cause problems in some mixes, and you can get the products coagulating?

Not really, I use manganese products a fair bit, you can mix them with a lot of stuff. The main no-no is mecoprop-P or any herbicide with it in, I have heard and read that apparently you can use it in mixtures if the right mix order is adhered to, etc etc, but I can't tell you how correct that is. TBH I don't use a lot of mecoprop in cereals anyway.

Check with manufacturers before you go mixing or do a bucket test. Mecoprop-p and manganese sulphate is a recipe for grunge in your sprayer. Not only that but you need to consider how much grief you are going to give a crop with funky tank mixes. If in doubt, I do the herbicide part separately to the PGR/Fungicide/Trace element part.

The problem i see it with waiting for foliar is that it becomes a single operation...if i can get it through to 3-5 leaf i can maybe do some N with it plus herbicide...

This crop has had the following
1. Insecticide and herbicide at 3-5 leaf
2. 15L of UAN - fungicide and mang
3. 20L of UAN
4. Fungicide and mang (not applied yet but will do early next week)

I'd like to try and keep it to 3-4 sprays and 1 spread of urea and potash....

So if i coat seed will that get me through to 3-5 leaf - or will i just have to spray anyway...what is everyone else doing or whats the spray program?
