Home saved seed

It's very easy - we made a fancy applicator (was still pretty cheap) but many just use a pipe running into an auger and it works
That is how the rest of the World's farmers do it, seen it done in fact, but in Canada and Oz I doubt they have to get the length of hose MOTd.

there is a few £ to be made from contract spraying, combining , ploughing even .....................but I don't see big national merchants rushing to buy up ag contracting business ?

I spy bigger agenda here ........... we should be concerned IMO

What agenda? Until they stop mobile dressers being imported or built here there will always be a market for HSS. If the majors jack the price up then new leaner operators will step in and undercut them.

You only need treatment if you have seed disease, want Deter or intend to plant into poor conditions where moulds can harm the seedling.

Grandad used to apply mercuric dressings to batches in a very large cement mixer years ago. Tipped it all in and left it running till everything nicely coated. It seemed like an effective way of distributing a tiny amount of powder evenly through a large amount of grain. Before that he used the butter churn!

I think the agenda is that breaders and merchants would rather we don't use fss

The harder or more expensive you make access to fss (most farms use mobile cleaner / dresser) the more attractive the new seed price looks

Of course there will always be some that have on farm kit or just dig direct into their heap but I reckon most farm savers will be using a mobile dresser

Most mobile dressers round here are home spun "Heath Robinson" affairs. Can't see anybody being able to stop them somehow, only perhaps by restricting sales of the dressings.

That's the reason they love GM and hybrids so much. Unviable seeds.

Most seed cleaner lorries have more than a simple gravity cleaner though don't they?
yes, a deawner, screen cleaner - the Gravity Separator separates due to differing weight of same size seeds. Ideal for removing fusarium, shrivelled grain etc and also boosting bushel weights etc...

But I wonder how much it really matters?

Again there is always two sides to it, and as we all know the self sown from the combine always seems to grow well....But my argument would be that if you are going to spend lots of money on seed treatments
then you want to put it on the best quality seed possible. Quality in = quality out.
Why choose not to give yourself the chance of getting the best possible seed?

Fair point. I'd still love to see some trials on whether it really makes a difference or not (obviously providing the seed isn't diseased)

Yeah me too, getting the seed disease tested is the first step. I cant help thinking seed with the most "mother" in it will get a better chance. We have seen that seed treatments in OSR can cause a delay in emergence, the cleaned only getting away faster and getting that vital leaf cover a bit sooner.
A bit of a gamble but considering all the best chemicals are getting banned (cruiser) its worth a shot...
