Homemade Straining Posts

Have got quite a few very straight birchwood tree trunks from felled trees. 8”-12” diameter. How long would you expect these to last as straining posts? They’re much heavier than any bought in strainers we’ve had before, but untreated.

Stand the bases in a preservative (creosote?) for a week or two, and when they're knocked in, slope the top in necessary and put a cap on it to shed rainwater.

Dry them out, then soak in waste oil and creosote for 6 months. They'll then last longer than anything you can buy.
If they were stood in 6in mix as they dried out would they soak it up?
No need to treat the bottom 2 ft below ground level, just 1 ft below ground and all above.
