If anyone is interested in barley made into alkagrain 30, then please get in touch as I can supply it. Can do wheat too but not much call at the moment as the price difference is quite large. Saves buying a pallet/tote of Home n Dry if your not using large quantities. I am UFAS registered and have 20 years experience of using Home N Dry. Either PM me or call me on 07576 759850. Thanks Andrew.

I assume once grain is crimped and treated, it's not suitable for grain bin storage (or through a grain blower), because it won't flow as well?

I just used FA sheep GP minerals from Wynnstay, either chucked in the hopper when I filled it (a bag to a ton... ‘ish), or free access in a bucket sat in a tyre.

No idea if that’s the best to use, but it’s what I had to hand. They stood still as soon as I stopped it for a bit, and took off again when I put it back in.
Had a bad do with FA Sheep GP minerals in home mix with weather/ram lambs a few years back, lost a couple with calcified wotsname? Use FA Ram & Lamb mineral now, with no bother.

It will, but your right in thinking not as well as dry grain so you do have to be a bit more careful.

Yes, I wouldn’t use mins with much mag in for entire ram lambs, or anything that was on long term feeding. Mine were all ewe lambs or wethers, and in & out in less than a month.

For the few hundred I was feeding it was hardly worth trying to source anything different though.

That’s right. It works by the urea being converted to ammonia gas by the moisture in the grain, the ammonia then treats the grain. Once that’s done (2-3 weeks), the job is done and the remaining ammonia gas just dissipates. It doesn't need sheeting after and it doesn't go off. I still have about 8t left in the corner of the shed from last year, being left over after the last full load of grain was sold & moved.

I’m not convinced of the claims that vermin don’t like it though, squirrels seem to make holes in the sheet to get at it!😡

so it's my annual dither as to if i try this or not :scratchhead:

chewing it over it more/less boils down to will treated home'n dry barley.....assuming an uplift in protein to about 15%......fatten lambs as the sole concentrate part of the diet? + minerals + straw or pea haulm as buffer.....or would i still need something else in mix.....either protein or palatability wise

:)
They will eat it might be a bit slow to get going on but that will be more to do with them not so keen on whole grain to start with unless , well if momma was fed whole grain back when they were small :)..... that will help, but you know that already.......

Dont be afraid to add water if its dry grain , 17 18% is blinking perfect, I reckon.

Given the chance Rats will eat it as well as ordinary grain, no difference ime .

Yes boy will They do on it , as long as they aren't shy, ...some will go for it more than others , another thing you will already be aware of, that's stock for you...

Do introduce steady, beware of acidosis, thats another thing the sale bumf exaggerates ime,....got to remember it's an awful lot of starch..... ultimately.....

Anyone done this through the chopper ? Wholecrop , my spring barley is flat , combine has a lot to do wondering weather to just wholecrop and be done with it , it’s to feed B&W bulls 😬

I used home grown whole barley, straight off the heap, mixed with the H&D pellets and sheeted for 10-14 days.
It makes a high starch alkaline ration (so no acidosis) with a 15% CP for about £30/t over the value of the grain, by the time I’d allowed for the mins.

I can’t imagine a ration that was cheaper, easier or safer tbh, and the lambs do well on it.
The grain would need processing for cattle obviously.

How does the cost of doing your own go against buying in crimp?

You just sheet yours in the yard and let it 'make'?

How long will it go once opened up?

No dust, no dry storage needed and no corn drying are the big bonuses to my mind. What's the maximum you can go to in terms of grain moisture?
