our 2 are doing much better this time now school are doing live lessons all day on teams

not much input required from us at all this time and orher than breaks they seem happy to sit sot there from 8.15 -4 chattering away to teachers and classmates

massive relief as last lockdown was a absolute nightmare, I can’t tell you how much difference the live aspect has made
Agree. There is a massive difference compared to last time. Seems they had big issues with permission last time to run online classes which was bazaar.

Our secondary doing nearly all lessons online as you would expect from paid professional educators after nearly a year of coronavirus in the UK. Primary basically just checking in for an hour a week. Which is an hour more than before.
We are getting 2 hours a day for 4 days a week. An hour of maths and an hour of English. There are optional arts tasks etc. This is for a 6 year old.

Must say I am a bit of a harsh daddy when it comes to computers. I expect both of mine to hand write things rather than word process. Eldest gets maybe two teams lessons a day. Youngest is almost entirely on pad and paper.

You simply can't beat repetition for number bonds, times tables etc.

Anyway me able to show me what method a yr6 child would understand to multiply 12.5 by 12.5? I can do it five ways, but how do they learn it? All I hear is "we haven't done this before". But the question needs it doing.

Year 6 I'd be breaking it down to 12.5 x10 added to 12.5 x 2 added to half of 12.5 unless there was a specific method they were supposed to be learning. I used to concentrate on kids actually understanding and being able to divide and multiply by 10,100, 100 etc doubling, doubling and doubling again to give you 2,4 and 8x Half, half and half again to give you the divides and of course multiply by ten and halve to give you 5x or turn it round.

Sorry to be a bit late to your query but it might help you next time.

Do numicons actually work? Trying to do maths with my 6 year old. School seem to teach number lines and numicons and he is just getting confused. I tried to get him to use his fingers, works for me!

Numicon is fantastic but a six year old probably still needs to be able to touch the actual tiles and lay them out in front of them. If you want to post up what you are being faced with I will happily take a look.

Unfortunately, the teacher in me has turned on. Here is the best maths mnemonic:-

Hey diddle diddle the median's the middle,
You add and divide for the mean,
The mode is the one that happens the most,
And the range is the bit in the mean.

I didn't write this but I did source it and spread it far and wide while I was still in the trade so if you already know it that could (emphasis) be down to me.

Adding, as well, that you can replicate numicon quite cheaply with the large egg trays or dozen egg boxes cut up. They can be spray coloured to match - blue hues are even numbers. Children can then count chick peas or similar into the cups.

Playdough pizzas are great for fractions again with chick pea "olives". Ideal as the dough can be cut and, being round the number of cuts is the same as the number of the denominator.

Decimals always taught using pounds ten p and 1p - for my class we had £10 and £100 notes as well easy to knock out on a printer/photocopier!

So if anyone dies want help I can (still) do most of the Welsh and English and possibly other curricular. I'm ok with the three basics up to end of ks3 and I can have a go at quite a lot of those three at GCSE, too. Please feel free to tag me.

Finally, a free science project idea. I love it because it does tick all the boxes but I would have wanted to see a lot more discussion about the difficulty of measuring sneezes.

Just sat and watched 11yr old (yr 7) doing science. I question if he really understands any of it. I end up doing loads for him and this way he isnt digesting much. He usually sits there growling at it. Loses his temper and has melt down. There is usually a video for the subject but he still cant process the information. Last week was a very simple geography lesson - all he had to do was fill in the blanks from researching the UK map. He just sat there then asked me. He cant process the data and how to take it forward. Its so difficult I cant be expected to sit next to him for 3 lessons. Ive tried to help him with telling him to refer to other vids. Its all too much for both of us.

Is it possible to break the videos down into chunks of information. Watch a section - talk it through - see if there's a question he can answer linked to it.

He's being expected to learn visually which is not most people's preferred method of learning! (Teachers score very highly as visual learners btw do this is lazy teaching imo.)

Although he's quite young, encourage him to record "notes" as he goes through each chunk. These can/should be doodles/pictures or individual words. I used storyline,/board with children from age 7 when watching any video info or when getting a talk. It turns visual/auditory learning into kinesthetic/multi sensory learning and is worth learning as a life skill. Once children understand that the notes won't be marked or judged and that they are there's alone to help them succeed they become very powerful tools.

I appreciate I am talking about a lot if time and effort from you here but it will resp regards.

You son sounds like he's really lacking in confidence and feeling disenfranchised with the situation which is hardly surprising. So again breaking the work down into small chunks and specific praise for any skills you perceive him using, even if he gets the answers wrong will really help.

Small positives are better than long negatives.

Sorry long post but I do feel your pain and want to help.

I have a copy of the Usbourne Science Encyclopedia from when I was young. It has oretty much all chem, Phys, biology to a&level. I read it the night before so I have a grasp on it before my child starts the lesson.

@Chasingmytail is it something that could be done more practically? Physics of forces by making model parachutes / acids and bases using vinegar etc?

It shouldn't be too complicated if the dozy Gov thought about it, there's spare capacity on Freeview that they could use for lessons, just needs someone to be creative.

Need some assistance, today we learnt about partioning, my daughter had already done it before, so knew the drill but asked my advice as it wasn't working out right so
7x16.
She chose 7x10 to give 70
and then 7x6 to give 42
Add them together gives us 112.
Yes i agreed, so what's the problem?
They say is 122??

A valuable lesson in itself!

This is a good chance to show using the calculator to do the reverse division as well as double checking the multiplication.

No calculator then 7 doubled doubled doubled and doubled again

She can do 7 X6 so double it.

Once you keep getting the same answer using different methods you can start to believe the text book is wrong!

It won't be a teacher's mistake - poor product design and no proof reading.

I agree proof reading isnt going on. I would def complain about that!

Lets face it 50% of the maths and english now is utter pretensions nonsense. Dont get it and done see the reason why they teach it. Taking up too much unnecessary time and confusing the hell out of the youngster. I never got why teaching anything beyond singular, plural and verb was necessary to a 10 year old. Yet both my boys still dont know their times table and the eldest is 15.

Hi looking for help with a survey on parents who would like home maths tutoring for children aged 8yrs to 13 yrs...

My lad had to do a online maths assessment last week. He is 14. He finished it off and sent it in. A reply then came back to him telling him the results. He was gutted. But he did show me this which I find totally shocking and its done absolutly f@#k all for his self confidence. The pictures I am going to attatch I took with my phone off his laptop screen, so they arnt the best quality. He was told these answers were wrong. Thats why if you look closely it gives you the "correct answer" . The question about the ingredients is wrong because he wrote the word grammes. The time answer is wrong because there is a gap between the time and pm. I totally understand the teaching situation isnt easy but this to me is just shocking. It isnt easy dealing with this and calving and lambing at the same time. A e-mail was sent to the school, guess what, no reply!!

I looked at this on my phone this morning and it still makes no sense to me now I've managed to get to my laptop and a bigger screen. It still makes no sense to me as to why it was marked wrong. I'm sorry if I'm being slow here - I assume its his answer in the box. If so his answers are correct and in line with the suggested correct answers. I've marked SATs and the Welsh end of year tests and the answers typed in the box would not have been marked wrong.

If he had answered the first question on paper and written 360g or 360 grammes (or equivalent there of) that would have been wrong because he has been given the units. (This used to cause all sorts of problems for 10 and 11 year olds.)

This is sh1t. If you don't get a reply from school, look on their web site for their complaints procedure, it has to be there by law. It's well graded but will allow you to say "I am issuing a complaint". It must get you a response.

Apologies now if I have misunderstood your original post.
