Commission Regulation (EC) No. 2257/94 of 16 September 1994 laying down quality standards for bananas

Bendy Bananas - the Myth to end all Myths

.
The EU trying to ban straight & bendy bananas is perhaps the most well-established Euromyth of them all. Is Brussels really meddling in what our beloved bananas should look like?

Yes & No.

Bananas are classified by quality and size so they can be traded internationally. Quality standards are also needed so that people know what they are buying and that the produce meets their expectations.

Straight & bendy are not banned by the EU. Commission Regulation 2257/94 identifies certain restrictions for fruits that producers have to conform to in order to sell their produce within the EU. The regulation states that bananas must be "free from malformation or abnormal curvature."

Class 1 bananas can have "slight defects of shape" and Class 2 bananas full-on "defects of shape".

In 2011 this regulation and other relevant rules were brought together for the sake of clarity under a single implementing regulation (1333/2011), and in 2013 a further change simplified reporting requirements (implementing regulation 565/2013).

Brexit is certainly the gift that keeps in giving. Whoever would have thought on June 23 2016 I would end up posting a link to this clip in February 2019. Fascinating.

Many thanks for posting that detailed clarification of the EU regulations concerning the marketable quality of bananas. I can now retire to sleep in peace knowing the world is a more secure and safe place. Sweet dreams.

Indeed, so it is not a total lie.

Interfering with the shape of bananas was bad enough, no way will the UK entertain the idea of the EU telling it how to run its government, and Brussels knows it, so it's just further childish petulance from Junker et al.

Funny you should mention bananas and the UK parliment .......

No not a total lie. The dark empire extends into all facets of life. If you want to be really disturbed just check out how the EU intended to introduce a Directive that provided regulations on the acceptable shades of red on apples. Was designed from the outset set by the French to ensure only Red delicious would be acceptable and thus the end of the Coxs Orange Pippin.

If it sounds like a Daily Mail invention, walks like a Daily mail invention, etc, etc, then it probably is a Daily Mail invention. You may recall a certain Boris Johnson no less when Brussels correspondent for The Telegraph was quite keen on spinning these sorts of myths. At a loose end while eating my Muesli and was just amused at this thread descending into Bananas so decided it should descend into fake news. Become a Muck Spreader!!

But who knows maybe there was an EU directive on apple colour!!

Best wishes,

Must have killed off the Golden Delicious instantly.

When trade deals are negotiated ,the devil is in the details. That is why it takes more than a quick chat and a hearty hand-shake.
Trade deals definitely require compromise. Personally I don’t think the erg will ever compromise with the EU. That’s the trouble with May’s deal it just puts off the day of reckoning in the Tory party for another couple of years. Meanwhile the ruinous uncertainty continues.

Does she and the Tory Party as an entity have the desire or want to confront the ERG party within a party this coming March 29th. Or as I suspect her preference is to kick that deadly can of worms down the track again. I follow these threads on here and listen to folk outside of farming in an attempt to gauge the true support for the hard leave advocated by ERG type folk. I really cannot decide. Hey ho.
