Has anyone modified their old duet Coulter’s to be more like a bean coulter? I have a set that will never go back on the drill and am after a narrower point. I think I could cut off the wings and weld a new seed boot on and end up with a 25mm point? Any experience??

Personally I would buy one of the various retrofit coulters available; you will always be able to buy rather than make spares, they will always have a resale value and if you go down the bourghalt/Dutch route you can always chop and change the actual tip to suit different situations as and when they arise. Plus it’s a phone call rather than 2 or 3 days cutting and welding!

I think what you are going to end up with is just a Horsch solo coulter. I tried one solo coulter on the drill this autumn but abandoned it as the seed just dropped right to the bottom of the slot, ( even though I added a trailing flat to act as a ledge) way too deep compared to the duets, and dutch openers I was comparing it to.
The advantage of the duet for me is the deep leading tine with the seed resting on ledges either side. The leading tine gives the roots a good easy route down and/or soil shattering. I can't really fault the duet ( apart from the power required for it) but I have very worn shoes which I am reluctant to replace with new, so possibly a modified narrow shoe is all that's needed.
I have tested duets, Metcalf, and dutch openers all on the same drill this autumn, and will be analysing plant and grass weed counts in the spring.
The theory being that lower disturbance narrow tines might lead to less grass weed emergence between the rows ( more or less direct drilled bar very shallow early cultivation and stale seedbeds), but this may be compromised by the lower competition due to the wider gaps.
