Before I take it to bits for a small leak is there anything I should be wary of before wishing I hadn't started? Fan works fine BTW but presume there must be seals inside?

If it's a Parker bent access piston motor I would fully dismantle it. If it's leaking from the shaft seal I would suggest you just try just replace the shaft seal.

Most are easy enough to do. My Deere ones have gone before and biggest expense is the oil in the tractor. Some have the fan mounted directly to the motor shaft so when the seals give out the oil fills the air tubes leaving a big clean out job. Get it changed and have a spare seal handy. If it’s a recurring problem try turning the flow down to zero before before going into float.

To be fair it's a 2008 drill and never had any seals done before and it's a pretty small leak so no oil in the fan or air tubes just some dribbles down the outside.
