Horstine granular applicator for small seeds.

I've got an old horstine applicator in the shed which came off an old beet drill, would it be possible to use it for distributing small seeds?

I'm thinking I could mount the three hoppers, which have 6 outlets in total onto the back of a 3.8m terradisc so the seed is dropped behind the crumbler and then if I fitted a row of harrow tines they'd just tickle the seed in enough. It would be a one pass into stubble for cover crops.

It would be mustard, turnips and or oil radish would the metering wheels cope with seed?? I could gear it up by fitting different pulleys to the land wheel .

We recently bought this to do the same job. It has a horstine seeder. 4 outlets on 3m. Haven't used it yet. We are going to get a following harrow to fit on back.

Robbie , has it nemsthorin or vidate metering cassettes in . ? Used to use them for rape . Did not block like the proper rape ones , yes they do cut odd seed but worked fine
Richard la ????? Cannot remember his surname from Suffolk . Comes and tests our tma 4. He is the man for bits. Or Lez Carter.
oil raddish. Is bigger seed , drop a handful in and stick mole grips on shaft and see what it does with them. , no reason why it won’t work , just want some wide fishtails to spread seed

Have you ever put grass seed through one?

Ours just has metering cassettes for rape/small seeds.

It's old as it has round galvanised hoppers, it was removed from our old webb 20 odd years ago and has been in the shed since. When it was in use it would have been used for temik and marshall.

l have used the exact same machine as you have described for osr for years., works well.

Seed distributors are at back. So thought it would benefit from something to cover seed. Do you think it would grow fine on surface.
Aye I've done osr both in front of and behind thr packer both without harrows and works fine .

I just drilled forage rape with the grass harrow but there was too much residue on top trailing in the tines so just spread it on top and the rolls cover it enough

@robbie i used some of the old type metal horstein boxes for osr for a year or two. Boxes worked fine fron memory just stopped as we weren't getting consistent establishment behind subsoiler.

Have thought about mounting them on a flexicoil to pull behind plough press like @Will 1594

That's great to hear, I think they'll be fine for mustard/ turnips but as yet not sure about the bigger seed if oil radish. I'll have to get them out and have a play around with them.

From the pictures @snipe posted I think they all have the same metering shaft ect its just the hoppers that altered over time. Has anyone got a book to give some idea what size pulleys I need for various rates???

If i remember correctly they are the same as the bigger horstein fert boxes. The metering units are segmented. You could remove some of the fluted rollers and put in blanks.

I dug the applicator out of the shed and tried it with mustard which was fine but when I tried it with oil radish it was like a pepper grinder but luckily dad remembered where the other cell where.

I don't know what these wheels are for but I'm going to fit them and see how it meters radish.

No we haven't got any fish tails, will they work on gravity feed I thought they only worked in pneumatic.

We clamped the whole applicator onto the pallet tines at about the right hight itll be mounted on the terradisc and we fashioned some distributor plates if different sizes and heights/ angles and laid some sheets of stock board on the floor to be able to see spread pattern.

Weve got 6 outlets on 3.8m at the moment but we do have another two hoppers in the shed. I'm tempted to add another one to them have 8 outlets which would make it easies to get the high ish seed rates we want for radish.
