Hosting Honey bees on your Farm

We get a payment in weight of honey per hive per year. We have 12 hives on each block of land.

Try Paddy at Quince honey farm South Molton. I don't know if he travels that far but may know someone or ask at a show as tgey usually have a bee keepers stand

We don't fence the hives off. We were told by the keeper that if you do and cattle get in there with loads of grass around the hives they knock them over, whereas free access they graze contented around them.
We don't fence hives either, the apiary in the pic the bees are in amongst the trees, the fence is the field border

My dad has bee hives, since selling the farm he's had to get a bit creative. Some are on scrub land around industrial units, some on an allotment. I believe he's spoken to a cider farm in Somerset who were keen but it turned out not to be practical.

I enjoy helping out when I visit, it's therapeutic!

Would you all consider Hosting a beefarme'rs bees on your farms to improve your crop yield and quality as diversification, I am told it ticks a green box as well. I would consider Hertfordshire - Bedfordshire area.

I have bees from a local first time bee keeper and love watching them.
I don't entirely buy into the fact that they are doing you a big favour though; some of these apiaries are big and lucrative businesses.

Depends what you Farm, managed and targeted pollination can and does make for better quality and bigger yield from things like OSR although it does not need pollination it’s a known fact that done properly honeybees on OSR can improve yield per Ha by 8-20 %. If it didn’t work the Beefarmers Association would not have a pollination secretary to arrange it all

Any farmers in Greater Manchester/Cheshire willing to host few hives on their land? I am keeping bees in my back garden, but my little daughter wants to get her picnic space back:D, so I need to move my apiary:cry:

Might be to far for you but I have a valley north of Bolton you can use. Bit short on food as main flow is Himalayan Balsam. Will also need badger protection.

We have hosted bee hives in the past and happy to do so again though the fact everyone and their bloody dogs seem to like wandering everywhere they shouldn’t might make it difficult now also being on the fringe of Chester I think we will be further away than Bolton for you

Can you let know what grows in the area for bees to forage?

Must have getting on for 50 hives across the farm here and it's a pleasure to have the keeper here.

4-5 pots of honey a year is a perfectly acceptable "rent".
Since our beekeeper “retired” we haven’t had any hives on our home farm for a few years. Got plenty of hives on the other farm, but would be keen to get some more at home
