Anybody use anything for house security?

Wondered whether Google Nest consumer level type products are any good, or better to opt for a more commercial Hikvision system?

Cloud storage via Wifi? Or wired system as it still needs power I guess? Storage via NAS drive also possible, but this would be via Wifi.

Total newbie to CCTV, have considered it for the yard previously but never quite creeps high enough up the list in terms of moneny and time but a small setup for the house could be a good starter.

Stick with Hikvision or Dahua. None of this other Nest nonsense. Don’t bother with cloud storage. You will need a 4G connection with good data allowance as a landline isn’t much good as the first thing one does is cut the line.

Best to install an NVR to record locally and even as backup fit SD cards in each camera for extra protection. You can use SD cards instead of an NVR but I prefer the NVR or both.

Network Video Recorder. Its the box that contains the storage drive for your recorded video and where your cameras link back to via cable or wireless.

We've had our Arlo cameras for about 4 years or so. Similar to nest, cloud storage etc. At the time it was about £400 for a 4 camera setup. It can be set up to alert from different cameras in a schedule, or just to record. It doesnt record permanently, it works on pir. It alerts to a mobile phone app.

It proved it's worth when we had some unwanted visitors one summer in the middle of the night. It has also alerted us to cows out in the middle of the night more than once! I'm not sure if the hikvision type do alerts?

It's easy to set up and install and cameras are magnetic so can be moved around when necessary - during calving I nab a couple of cameras for the calving sheds. The cameras are battery powered and use wi-fi.
