Planning on putting an extension on the back of our two storey Victorian stone house. Its an isolated house with an almost unlimited garden size so taking up valuable garden space is not a consideration.
Looking to put on about 75m2 of floor space for large kitchen diner, shower room etc. and an extra bedroom.
There seems to be lots of opinion that two storey is the most cost effective option some saying it only adds 50% to the cost of single storey to add the extra floor.
My thoughts are a two storey extension will require cutting into the roof of Victorian house, knocking through upstairs and will cause disruption whilst this is done. It also requires extra scaffolding, lifts etc. and probably a new staircase as our current layout is a bit of a pickle.
So I think I'm leaning to a single storey as there is less unforseable problems than trying to work with an old house, it would require no new openings etc.
Interested to hear others experiences and thoughts?
