Its actually a requirement to have a number displayed on the house or gate posts ,,emergency services from out the area wouldnt know which place was which if they only had names and worse still if two properties had the same name and were close together

The number and post code are fixed as they are on the councils register ,,the name is something that was given by its owner and isnt actually required as a postal address unless that is its a a single property miles from civilization and has only ever been know by a name .
This is usefull

https://www.vividdoors.co.uk/blog/how-to-change-or-add-a-house-name/

Post codes can be changed, but it requires a bit of creative form filling with the post office.

A neighbouring farmhouse was sold a few years back, and the buyer soon developed an issue with having his deliveries dropped off at the wrong farms.
He contacted the PO who explained that if his house and the cottages were 'recently built' they could have another postcode allocated to them. So yes, his house was then listed as 'recently built', despite being about 250 years old. One stipulation from the PO was that all residents on the farm had to agree to the change, so he typed out a letter for each of them, explained to all 8 why a change would be good (sat nav takes their deliveries to 2 other farms too) and sent the letters off for them. Job done.

Has anybody had any experience on registering a farm address where there is no house? Is it possible?
I built a new farm yard where deliveries need to go and it hasn't got an address.

Yes, I did it quite recently, with the local council street name department.
I sent an email explaining what I wanted to do and why, ie. get deliveries to farmyard buildings where there is no house.
I had to provide a map with an arrow on it indicating where a post box is. That’s all they needed.
Cost me £27 but now have a post code for the farm buildings.
Very simple with my local authority.

No house number here and has never been. Maybe helps that the farmhouse has been on all the Ordnance Survey maps since the first one in 1850.

Hardly any rural houses here have a number - only 1 or 2 if semi-detached sometimes. In town, lots of the older houses just have a name and the street. If you call 999 you just leave the front light on - unless there are flames too. The house is sometimes 2 miles from the village it refers to so directions often needed for emergencies.

We've never had numbers here or previously. Wouldn't be much help, if we were no 1, say, no 3 would be a mile and a half away.
