how are things progressing? Is the process proving straight forward?
I followed up the request from Fieldbee that @steveR posted up earlier.
Initially, it sounded like the Ukrainians were migrating to the west of their country in the hope of returning home relatively soon. Fieldbee had taken over a hotel for their staff and families.
Watching the news, it doesn't look like a quick fix out there now. This morning had an email from them asking if we would be able to accommodate a lady and her 11yr old son.

Theu have applied for the visas using quite a lot of detail from me. Got a call from local county council today so obviously the application is progressing. The local district have to inspect the property and we have to do enhanced DBS checks even though they are taking a separate dwelling.
By the sounds of it though there will be a lot of council support once they arrive, cash handout for essentials, assistance with doctors, NI number, benefits, local community groups etc.
The council lady also said they had been inundated with local people offering a room in their homes.

Big downside is that they apparently are imposing some strict rules on what we can offer, children above a certain age cannot share rooms if not the same sex, one local had to do work on his house because it wasn't up to council standards. I think if i was escaping the russian lunatics antics i would settle for anything as long as it was safe

Let's hope you're right, I'd hate to think some hardened killer turns up on your doorstep with a bunch of flowers. Could be a long 3 years!
My wifes cousin is married to a Ukrainian. At present they have her 15 year old nephew staying with them in London her brother is somewhere fighting Russians and she’s had no contact with her parents for several weeks due to communications networks being down. The brother was a normal working person until the facist thugs of a deranged madman attacked their homeland. You could send me your name and address so hopefully when he is able to collect his son he could pop round and you could share your views on why him and his friends have been so stupid in standing up to Putin and his murdering soldiers.

My question to you would be the same, without the West or NATO being prepared t step in where do you see this ending up, the West can keep it going a lot longer with weapons but there will come a point where weapons simply are not enough then what?

It stops when either the Russians or the Ukrainians want it to stop. If we stop supplying weapons and other aid it stops very soon. However the truth is the Ukrainians are being forced to fight by Russia not the west. The actions of the Russians are not those of liberators but conquerors and luckily few people share your views .

Don't get me wrong my sympathy is with the Ukrainian public who are the ones who end up suffering the most, soldiers do what they are ordered to do whatever country they are from.
This is a war that should never have been allowed to start, who is to blame we can argue about but from where I sit there just seems to be no end to the suffering & destruction the Ukrainians will endure, yes the Russians are to blame for continuing this war but the Ukrainian leadership are not blameless.
I remember a TV interview when the Russians & Ukrainians sat down for the very first "peace" talks & halfway through the talks it showed Zelensky on TV signing the papers to join NATO, clever eh!

Zelensky like the majority of the world thought as the freely elected leader of a sovereign state thought he could do what he was elected to do. Obviously in the scheme of things he really should have paid a bit more attention to his deranged neighbour. The truth though is Putin wanted/ needed a war in 2022 though we all thought those days and those sort of leaders were long gone.

Zelensky hasn't signed papers to join NATO because there is no offer for Ukraine to join. He has even publicly stated that he is open to agreeing not to join NATO.

There was no practical way to prevent this war other than Ukraine rolling over and letting Putin and his bully boys walk in and take over... just like the events of 1938/39!

The EU has handed President Zelensky a questionnaire which will lead Ukraine a step further in being granted EU candidate status at a conference in Kyiv.
Speaking to the Ukrainian President, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said the EU will support Ukraine to ensure its completion takes "weeks, not years", as the process has been somewhat accelerated due to the war.

I don't see NATO mentioned anywhere there!

So we are getting a little bit further.

Local council coming out today to make sure i'm not a people trafficker. Then someone has to come to inspect the house to make sure it is good enough. Pretty sure it won't get bombed anytime soon so i would say it is good enough. Oh the joys of beaurocrisy

I get what you are saying but sadly, about the first people to turn up on Ukrainian borders were f@cking traffickers 🤬🤬🤬

Our 'contact' has now applied for her and her son's visas with us as sponsors. The system seems to be working ok and will of course take time. The local council are getting things moving and sound reasonably organised. In our borough/district there have been 187 applications (½ children) and there are just 21 outstanding to be processed -
The lady coming to us is currently in Latvia in a single room with her 11 yr old son, interestingly though she doesn't want to come to the UK before the end of May. Her son has been fortunate to get schooling at a Russian speaking school that teaches the same syllabus as his school in Kyiv. There term finishes end of May, which is when they want to come to UK

Amazingly, he still doing ½ of his lessons with his school in Kyiv online, his mother said it's just like covid all over again!
Meanwhile ,her husband has been drafted into the army.
