How’s your OSR looking now

Certainly a difficult year but walked out late (September) drilled block today that has had me concerned all autumn and was pleasantly surprised

no inputs at all so far apart from the farm saved seed and 50kgs DAP at drilling

Going to be a battle keeping pigeons off all winter but frankly I didn’t expect it to get this far

I’m going to walk some of the more forward stuff tomorrow so will post some pictures of that - the difference just 10 days establishment date has made this year is remarkable

No gylphosate? No volunteers present? If so then top marks to combine operator.

no glyphosate used pre or post harvest on this block as it was turned straight around drilled tight behind balers as straw was removed - there are areas with more volunteers and grassweeds though that normally would have been sprayed by now that need sorting out ASAP

If you think the wheat situation round here is bad, the osr is awful. Yesterday I drove past one early drilled block that looked ace, and a similar sized one that is ok. But that's a tiny fraction of the drilled area. Large blocks that have been abandoned.

Mine looks ok. Some is fine, some is just hanging on with 4 small beetle munched true leaves. A hard winter without snow cover will finish it. The difference between the best & worst is the month of drilling. August = viable. September = dodgy. I thought I'd missed the main flea beetle migration by drilling a bit later based on 2018's infestation. Anything sown before bank holiday Monday in 2018 was eaten. This year, the main migration started bank holiday weekend and went on until well into September. Fields with sewage cake applied had no less damage, in fact 2 out of 3 fields spread with it have been written off.

So far, unlike 2018, there aren't many larvae in the stems or leaf petioles so there's hope for what survives with winter around here.

@Laggard has the best crop I've seen in TFF so far.

Mine looks good, a bit too thick if anything. Just been looking at it today and a bit concerned as finding big patches like this and finding caterpillars. They seem to be chiselling about an inch out of the bottom of the stem, lots of bits on the floor. Anyone else seen this before.

Apart from my clearfield, all of mine is very forward, I know where I’m walking the dog tomorrow now! Is it just the biggest plants that have been attacked

I send my bags back this year. Too wet to make the seedbed i wanted in a timely manner.
I have learnt to leave it in the bag if it can't get a good start.
I don't know anyone who don't grow hybrids here, so establishment is costly just in seed.
Non-hybrids start too slow to be recommended.

I think it’s something about chickens that beetles don’t like.

I often spread Fibrophos, incinerated poultry manure, on standing crops and farmers often comment they’ve had no beetle trouble.

After all, when did you last find a flea beetle in your egg sandwich? Eh? ;):joyful:

interesting this as chicken muck is high calcium isn’t it ? I wonder if there is any connection to what I’ve seen re CSFB abd the drill placed calcifert here this year ?

could be good news for lime contractors !!!

It would be very nice to have some good news!!!

It’s hardly ground breaking though. We’ve been putting lime on standing osr for over 25 years.

We used gypsum and Calfos on ours, don't think it has helped, even chicken muck on one hasn't got away. On the whole my own hybrid stuff should just be ok but the jury is out on the contract hear rape with one field almost certain to be written off and the others in the balance.
If we can get 1/2 a tonne to the acre they will stay imo not even going to get KERB till the very last opportunity
