How accurate is cell count recording?

Obviously I know they can change constantly but if we recorded and say the top 5 highest cells were contributing to make it simple 10% and our cells were 250 should we see a drop of 25 or so in these were to be dumped or does it just not work like that?

Below 200 no infection
Above a million cow has mastitis and should be treated
200/1 million cows have infection but are fighting it and will self clear or will get full blown mastitis which will need treating
In the past I've separated cows out the herd above 500 and scc has stayed the same

Separating cows out depends on their %contribution hence why bulk tank may not change much. Treating cows off a cell count list for mastitis is pointless unless you are having real issues with cell counts.

Off the top of my head the 200 figure is chosen as a cut off because above this 70% are infected. The higher the number the greater the chance of infection. Likewise below 200 their will be a proportion infected.

if those cows were not giving a great volume of milk relative to others then it won't make a big difference and of course it also depends how many you are milking and how many you decide to dump. The NMR do a standard report which identifies what % they are contributing to the bulk tank as well as the actual individual SCC. On our current list, in descending order of SCC, number 4 at 332 is contributing 8%, which is more than number 3 at 357. That is because number 4 is producing more milk. At present, 9 out of 81 cows are contributing 56% of our SCC, and that is with the highest at 780, the only one above 500. Our bulk SCC from the tank that day was 72. The 'average of all the cows recorded, was 78, which shows how it is pretty accurate.

this is basically what I was getting at. They’ve given us the sheet with percentage of contributions so in theory we can dump those cows to bring our cell down to an acceptable level.

These are my highest performers in the SCC stakes but none of them show any clinical signs but one or two show up on California milk test. We only treat mastitas on conductivity as it is a more accurate measurement IMHO.the figures to the left are the % contribution

I think you need to take a good look at your new infection rate if your dumping cows to get an acceptable bulk cell count. Something more than just broken cows.

i fully agree. First issue is to bring it down within payment Bands then build from there. We’ve been shafted by a shed builder leaving us without a roof over half our shed so that’s hardly ideal.

Had a cow with scc of 1.8 million and clots self cure next month recording scc under 100
Im fully convinced cell count after doing all things correctly breeding plays a huge role the dainish jersey part of my herd has huge numbers of cows with counts below 10 and 20 thousand
