Quite a chilling wind here at the moment (mendip hills somerset) bit of rude awakening on new-borns first thing in morning , just wondered how some of the later lambing flocks are getting on with this late taste of winter , hate this wind in jan / feb let alone may . Glad i didnt lamb some of the march born hoggs late this year often do a batch in mid may . they got away with it this year because of very wet last back end

suppose high quality spring grass makes a lot of difference to brown fat levels in newborns , as long as some shelter from hedges while wet , was like autumn with green leaves all down road sides this morning

Yesterday was a miserable one for new born lambs here with rain, hail, wind and even the odd flurry of snow but today has had less precipitation to compound the chill wind. Lambs in fields with dips and hedges in have been sunbathing and look 100% better than the bedraggled critters they were yesterday.

In sheltered water meadows and ridge and furrow, lambs seem well tucked into ground when not running in groups.

just been round some lambs in a 4ac field with v high hedges (landlord likes to lay a section each year) , was as still as anything , surprising difference leaves on trees make

Im lambing a late bunch on a rolling/steep field that is sheltered on 3 sides...........only trouble is the wind is from the east....the only unsheltered side!!

And ewes seem to be wanting to spent all hours of the day on top of the filed in the worst wind, I guess that the flies are less active up there.

But lambs are doing fine. Dry ground makes a big difference.

That's why I've got a catch dog.
