How Can Pork Or Chicken Pay When It's Almost Free At The Shop?

Morrisons are paying at the moment. They are 'helping' the industry clear it's backlog by giving away what we produce. Price at the farm gate on the open market is approx £1.40/kg dwt. Pork is a loss leader for them at the mo.

Our bloody fault for producing so much though really. And for being so willing to put up with the poor returns.

Un-anticipated loss of market on 1st Jan might have had a little to do with the price collapse....

I'd like to see that data that dropping a chicken from £4 each to £2.50 each increases consumption by 1/3.
It would help though , they have got to keep emptying the fridges and taking the pigs etc , you cant just switch these farms of like a light the pigs keep being born, the pens get full and the animals get bigger /fatter/out of spec etc and they eat . Its a constant cycle over stocking intensive livestock isnt on for long .
At least morrisons acknowledge this and do something , have they dropped their ex farm price ? I think perhaps they are sharing the pain maybe ?
They promoted beef steaks in 2020 when lockdown came in causing the carcass/market balance to be wrong and kept their abattoirs going in spite of many staff issues etc .

I understand the excess supply problems. Just can't marry up how Mr consumer expects high welfare / small numbers of stock per farm to marry up with current prices.

I've just spent more on three pieces of root ginger than four decent pork chops.
I dont think the consumer expects anything , apart from full shelves . But I do think this is better than maintaining the retail price and driving blindly towards the wall at farm level in the short term while they either reduce sow no.s or find new markets which takes time .

We are not over producing pigmeat in this country.

Almost half the pigmeat eaten here comes from the EU where they enjoy lower welfare standards in the main and can produce pigs more cheaply.

It is still flooding in without checks whereas any bits we export are having compulsory major form filling excercises and hold-ups.

It was always my biggest fear in Brexit that we allow anything in buy they won't take ours without extra hassle and therefore cost.
We should apply exactly the same checks each way

If anyone is bored next week, you can watch my basic guide to making a lovely chinese roast pork belly, and a Japanese breaded pork cutlet. All designed to be economic, low mess, and impress your spouse. Chefs eye view. Step by step. Costed and calorie counted. Should be on YouTube a week on Tuesday .

Will also be doing basic sauce making; maximum meals from a chicken; stock making; basic butchery to debone chicken thighs etc.

Intensive soya fed broiler chicken is fast production .
These state of the art modern sheds are pushing out 7.5 crops
a year (so I've been told by my mate with new sheds).
The volume of meat they produce in such a short time
is unbelievable, that's why it can be sold cheap by the supermarkets.
And it’s tasteless chicken , only good for lathering a sauce on or curry.
Can’t believe the difference in taste since we started buying more expensive out door reared chicken .
Farmers largely shooting ourselves in both feet, chasing quick production at the expense of quality in my opinion

I read an article about the price of EU pork Vs UK. But then I don't buy anything without the British logo on. I wouldn't even consider non- UK meat.
Neither do we unless we have no option.
I hope Tinned meat can be the only exception
IE SPAM,PEKPORK,CORNED BEEF,TINNED STEAK etc.
i wouldnt even buy NZ Lamb sorry got no grind to have with NZ Folk but when there is plenty produced in the homeland for us to have access too WTF is that travelling all them miles to us for?
I cant figure that one out whatsoever & i actually dont care if the UK Produce is dearer, esp for the amount we buy in a year about 3 LEGS & thats it.
