I have a nice quiet suckler cow that has just had a heifer calf , my 10 yr old son has fussed her since she was a calf, i would like to transfer her to him so he can start a little herd. He is really interested and i want to encourage something he enjoys and it will help him save some money for when he's older. Do i need to have a new holding number just for him separate from mine ? Can you have 2 separate holding numbers on 1 farm in 2 different names? Is their any thing else i have not thought of?

We have 2 seperate livestock owning business here on the same farm.

Both business operate under the same holding number - the number associates to the holding / farm, not the business.

The flock / herd number corresponds to the farm where an animal is born, not a business.

I also think the time he hits 16 they wont be funding for young entrants any way?
Be very careful, him owning a cow could disqualify him from being classed as a new entrant to agriculture in the future.

I know someone who has missed out because they owned a few sheep, leading them to missing out on some substantial funding.

The cow could still be his without him actually owning it.

Just keep it under your name on the holding, but any calf sold etc is sold in the sons name, (its what i do with my sheep) and if and when he gets older tell him to get some blank tags and stick them in his cattles ears as a form of identification i.e blue tagged cattle are his.....just make sure he dont tag any of your cows while you aint about haha

We do the opposite here and run two numbers off the same premises for two different businesses.

Apparently the new cph rules don't have an option for these cases so we are 'on hold' until someone comes up with an idea

Maybe rules are different in England. I'm doing it exactly as SGRPID prescribed.
