i need to make a bale feeder but cant decide on width.
bateman ring feeders are 7' in diameter, and ive not seen waste in the middle , but most square feeders are only 5'

if i made a feeder 9 x 6 would cows be able to reach ?

Yes.
Square feeders can be put up against a gate or fence and used from one side.
I'd say 6ft for heifer / youngstock feeder, 7ft for adults, if access to both sides.

We have a couple of the bigger iae square feeders and cows can't quite clean 30mm chopped silage in the middle despite a pallet laid in the bottom. We're talking a triangle a foot tall and wide I guess. Width and height of the head space will have a big impact.

just looked on IAE and the biggest is 1940mm wide - just over 6'

looks like ill be going for 1750 wide as its exactly half a crashbarrier (y)
