How far out is your moisture metre out this year.

Mine went away to martin lishman for calibration. Come back .01% out on barley. Loaded a lorry at 5pm. The barley had been in the shed around a hour. Next day I get claims for 15.2% when everyone is cutting wheat at 14%. So I take my sample to the local store just to check. And they make 13%. What the hell do you do.

Is there a difference between grinding grain or whole grains in a moisture metre. This is my question. You can get one green grain in the grinding and it can put the moisture up. But whole grains is a different story.

We are 2% difference between whole and ground this year, ground being lower and same as The merchants Are making the moisture

Arrive at the mill at 5 to 5 on Friday night and I’ve known my moisture meter to be as much as 2% out. Can’t be arsed to tip it. Reject it and knock off fir tfe weekend. Strokers.

Last year we had a load rejected and returned they said 17%. Sampled here three times out the lorry spout as we loaded it back in our store, 15% on my RT Assured meter. But that counts for nothing of course. The lorry driver witnessed my meter readings. Nobody the slightest bit interested. Attitude of how dare you question the mill intake. Makes a total mockery of RT insisting on moisture test and retaining samples. They are completely ignored.

I’ve found the only way to be sure is to have a oven dried sample for each crop as a reference, I check my meter against the sample everyday, and often during the day, the meter needs constant tweaks to keep it accurate
This is an example of me as a grower going over and above the RT standards which again are merely a box ticking exercise…

I sent 2 loads thurs as well, 15.7 and 15.8 both tested below 15 here on two different meters. I spoke to the driver friday and he said he tipped it in the main shed with 2500t of other barley, somebody either has a lot of drying to do or its not damp!

Used to be a mill on Felixstowe docks, after many Friday load rejections we refused to load for them. Rest of the week never a problem????
