How important is vernalisation??

As the title says is this as important as we are told by the scientists? if so how does Australia and other hot climate countries grow W Wheat.?? or are ALL their varieties only Spring Wheat. If so we all ought to grow a small area of Spring Wheat to cover our backs for HSS as this situation may occur in future years ..

Not trusting the scientists? No idea, but if you could get one of your clients to drill some Kerrin late April along with their Spring wheat, then report what happens later in the summer. Be good to know. Cheers.

In the outback in Australia can get cold at night so wouldn’t that vernalise there wheat?

Yes it is important, if the wheat doesn’t vernalise it will stay in it’s vegetative stage and not go into reproductive stage and therefore produce any grain.

As said above Australia does indeed have cold weather which causes vernalisation, infact this year in the shire of esperance there were late frosts at anthesis which caused a very significant drop in yields.

Vernalisation is used as a protection mechanism by wheat to prevent it flowering in cold weather to ‘hopefully’ prevent this happening.

I now a farmer that sow springwheat in September many years ago. It was a good wheatcrop next year ! It was homesaved seed and he think it was WW .

Yes, definitely important.

Ive seen winter wheat, barley and triticale all fail to vernalise when sown late in the spring.
Granted it was trial plots but pretty convincing all the same!!!

In 2014 I refilled some patches that had drowned with Diego, it must have been early April, it all produced a seed head, but perhaps we had some cold weather late that year

Vernalisation is down to temperature & time as far as I know.

It begins as soon as the seed germinates underground.

If my agronomist was asking this I’d be a bit concerned to say the least!
Of cause vernalisation is vital, if you want to harvest a crop from a winter cereal variety.
Latest safe sowing dates are best guesses to make sure 99.9% of crops would actually vernalise in a warm spring if sown at that time. How far back you can actually push it in any given year is something only the plant can tell you after the event.

Winter wheat varies in definition

Warmer climes call fall sown Spring wheat (over “winter(ed) wheat”) which causes the confusion
