How is agriculture going to get net zero by 2040?

Surely it is easy to get to net zero with livestock.
All permanent grass.
Only eat grass or hay, or silage as long as it isn't wrapped.
Never house anything.
Use stored water or rivers.
No fertilizer and only use clover for nitrogen.
Sell all produce to local outlets and slaughter at the local abattoir just up the road.
Drive all livestock along the roads again.
Cattle hides used for clothing or furnishings.
Sheep skins for clothing and Ugg boots.
Wool for warm jumpers.
Have a good sized veg garden with fruit bushes and trees.
Have enough vines to make decent wines.
Barley and hops for beer.
Use coppiced timber for fencing and firewood.

Maybe have an electric bicycle to go to Town charged from solar panels.
No problem to get to net zero.

And quadruple food prices as a result.

No problem for farmers…..but the public probably wouldn’t be too impressed.

Don't. It's a trap. Red Tractor for the next generation of farmers. If you do want to give it half an hour of head space, then email the NFU and tell them to ditch it now.

No because narrative is methane = bad

Exactly this.

Taking the “carbon footprints” shown on the COP26 menu, I’m pretty sure they only cover the theoretical value associated with their ingredients. Certainly not the processing, preparation and shipping.

I’d be pretty sure that significantly more than 50% of the carbon footprint of a beef burger served at the event was after the meat left the abattoir and the wheat left the farm. None of which would have appeared on that menu.

Given the energy that goes into cooking something vs growing something is often high I expect you are right

It's what being advocates by farming leaders. Tell me how to do it.
Grow trees to offset. That's what the big emitters are already starting to do. With luck you might already have enough trees and greenery growing on your land to already be 'carbon neutral' using this proven method. :ROFLMAO:

It's all a load of bóllocks in case you hadn't already noticed. No idea what the NFU's game is. It's certainly not putting the best interests of its members foremost.

I am more than happy to be paid, not to fly, therefore the person paying me can claim to save xxxx amounts of Carbon and therefore become Carbon neutral. Of course another way to become Carbon neutral would be to buy more land, and plant trees on it (or for that matter pay farmers abroad to grow trees).

and when you get to Town, past the empty or re-wilded fields, if Deliveroo and Just Eat aren't delivering to your address, make sure you stock up with ready-meals and a take away or two for the freezer......

How the hell have we got to this.......

I’m not sure the leaders know. Minette Batters made the promise before any idea of how it was going to be achieved or what the on Farm financial impact assessment was going to be and, more irritatingly, before discussing it with members.

I don't think you need to worry about it because as far as I can tell Dr Jonathan Scurlock in the letters of this weeks FW, being the NFU adviser in climate change, must have a plan for all of you for cutting emissions. Otherwise why would they sign up to it?

Farmers can get to nett zero I reckon, we control a lot of assets with sequestration potential …….. our supply industry has no hope however and neither do our customers

these lines are VERY important (and valuable ) to defend

problem is our supply industry and customers are going to do their level best to steal our nett zero ……… aided and abetted by people like the NFU whim they have working for THEM

How?

Don't get me wrong I'm all for reducing carbon emissions and nitrous oxides where we can but NET ZERO. Actual net zero??
