How is your broadcast wheat looking?

And where are the seed broadcasting police exactly?

Well you know only to well there are no 'seed broadcasting police'.

The principle underlying the UK pesticide regulatory process is one of trust and honour from farmers.

Society entrusts regulators to approve pesticides on the basis of an approval. So, for example, if a label for a seed dressing were to say 'do not broadcast' then the decision is with the farmer.

But we should not be surprised to lose chemical approvals if society considers that trust has not been honoured.

I do sympathise though.

It's certainly not science anymore.

That is as maybe. But that is the reality. I consider your statement a tad reactionary, but that is by the by. Some of the science I assume you refer to has two sides to the opinion. A topic for another day.

To continue with my poor analogy, I do not agree with the 60mph speed limit on the A52 and push the boundaries regularly. Should I be annoyed if I lose my right to drive on the A52 if I exceed that limit.

I still stand by the point that they cannot possible know anybody has broadcast anything unless they actually see them doing it and catch them.

Indeed. To quote Malcolm Tucker:

My expert would totally disprove that.

Who is your expert?

I don’t know, but I can get one by this afternoon. The thing is, you’ve been listening to the wrong expert. You need to listen to the right expert. And you need to know what an expert is going to advise you before he advises you.

Haven't told them anything have I if you re read everything.
Not no an individual basis, you just state it is widely being practiced. I don’t care whether your statement would stand up in court, nor do our detractors.
Sod the rules. Be sensible and do it. Loads are.
Even if you feel you can dissect the above statement and twist it into not meaning what it first appears to say, it is an incitement which may mean others are more likely to do it.
If we abuse these products we deserve to loose them, and we will.
As an industry we have been fortunate in that our infield practice has not often been directly monitored or questioned. Don’t believe that means it is not being indirectly monitored.

That’s a delusional view in a year like everybody is having. The next 3 month forecast is generally wet so people will do whatever they need to to survive.

Why do you need to broadcast treated seed? Farm save seed off the heap would be the thing to use if you want to broadcast.

It's funny, I had a conversation yesterday about how some hotspots for chemical in watercourses just don't go away despite the majority trying hard to avoid it happening.
The ones jfdi are going to spoil it for the rest of us, and I for one get pretty pee'd off with trying to do it right only to watch it being ignored / flouted by others.
Be under no illusion that just like metaldehyde other chems will be banned if found persistently in watercourses.

I could post a few pics of the broadcast wheat local to me, but don’t like to because it’s somebody else’s.

It does look remarkably good though, reasonably even, although behind what stage it usually is for the time of year.

Certainly better than everybody else’s stubble or wet cultivated land.

The key with broadcasting is to start early enough before soil temps drop to the point where growth is very slow. Oh yes, chuck plenty of seed on as well....

When I broadcast in the past we alway have followed it with Somme drilled crops when it dried out
except 1982 when my dad gave up early so as not damage then soil
too me 30 years to learn the lessons he learnt in the 1960s
hopefully now drilling it into the next generation not to force it
this year is a good lesson for the young farmers that pushing 0n and mauling heavy ground does not pay
if it does not mall then it’s not heavy land
