The best way to decide when to switch to a cover crop in my experience is when you know in your heart of hearts that you are only going to break even or worse and give yourself a load of work and expenditure which you may or may not be repaid. Then you can cost the cover crop seed which would be your only downside if you chose that route.

You should be able to keep that below £25 a hectare.

Easier to adopt that approach if no rent to pay.....

Excellent. If mine had been stubble or cover crop I would of done the same, soil temps are not as cold as people think. Night air temps are very low however. Any linseed next year will either have a seedbed prepared in the autumn or be direct drilled in the spring, most likely is a mix of the two.

Everything is easier if there is no rent or finance to pay. Makes you farm smarter if there is though!

Mines in deep . 80kg seed 80kg 34.5n 3kg slugg. Hope now , another week or 2 it would be getting to hard to drill. Not fun today no air con and it was bit warm.

I had some drilled with a Sly last year into some failed OSR, what I certainly discovered is that there is a sweet spot where it will grow well with moisture but any more that 40 mm and it was too deep.

It won’t grow in the bag, however I’m beginning to think it might stay there this year, at least it’s not treated. My seed bed is 100% dry in the top 3 “ and has been for at least 2 weeks.

Never had that problem, but have been astonished at the slug burden AFTER Linseed.....Worse than any Rape crop we have grown. That's only really happened since going Disc Zero Til though....And overall generally don't use pellets anymore anyway since Zero Til.

They cleaned up my winter linseed in autumn 19. Never had a problem in spring.
