How long should a machine last

The local dairy company takes them to quite high K's and they don't seem to give too much bother.
I used to drive an 08 Scania with a 3 pedal Opticruise, fantastic truck but terrible transmission, wouldn't climb in auto and was constantly back at the Scania Importer having a new box fitted (I think they were just reconditioned) almost every truck in the fleet had the same problem. I heard Scania blamed the importer for getting something wrong and they're now better but they lost a lot of sales because of it.
I agree, the 3 pedal opticruse can't make up it's mind what gear it wants to be in so just changes up and down all the time. Then you go to slow down and it drops about 4 gears and screams its head off. Those I shift I mentioned would have about 1 million km on them

No idea what year V reg would be but crash boxes in '86!? And here I was assuming that the crash box went extinct in the first few years of the 50s since that was the case up here....
Edit: I meant Europe of course, I know that the US and some other places are still stuck in the 50s.
I'm calling non synchro crash here. The Eaton twin splitter is non synchro and was in general use well in to this century. You're definition may well be different and quite possibly be right

Lost count of the number of times the gearbox was out of the one my shift partners and I drove. You had to drive it in manual on some of our hills as it would just stall out in auto, character building stuffo_O
The rest of the truck was mint though, left at 6 years and 1.4 million K's. Not a rattle in the cab despite the fact a lot of its time was spent on shingle roads and long rough tanker tracks. (y)

That's because they're run all day everyday, the same as loading shovels and quarry equipment. They clock up high numbers of hours per year and have good service schedules and operators trained in there use. Tractors tend to be more seasonal and carry out a range of roles.
I'm sure the list or repairs on 20,000 hours of forestry service would be substantial, where as any failure or part replacement on a tractor has them labelled as unreliable junk.
Had a jd harvester working here few years ago , two years old iirc 22k repair , they might get to 20k hrs but they don’t get their on their own .

I was talking with a guy today & he was telling of a problem he has with a new machine,He bought a new machine in 2015 , full dealer service history record to date on it & it is now needing a complete new engine & has only done 2500 hours, the machine is out of warranty now & the manufacturer as no interest in his problem at all & will not lift a finger to help him & he is going to have to fork out for a complete new engine, he asked me if i knew at what point is the machine not fit for the purpose it was bought to do & what design live a modern day machine should have , he is not a forum member so i said i would ask for it , i must say i was very surprised to be told this manufacturer had no interest in his problem at all.
A lad that helps us used drive a loading shovel at a mine at night in the winter, said it had 44000 hours on the clock.

It was indeed. 2pedal version was better, but not a patch on an ishift.
Volvo synchro boxes would jump out of gear a bit at big miles (1.5m+) but generally not much bother, we used to wear diffs out faster.
Scania synchro 12 speed box pretty good too.
All of them (manual or auto) could chew clutches in the wrong hands. Scanias were buggers for half shafts too.

There was nowt wrong with the 2 pedal one, just not as good as the I shift. The manuals were good I've seen them take a lot of stick, agree on the soft clutches, alright if you respected them.

I've driven most of the main makes of auto gearbox and my order would be Volvo, Scania 2 pedal, Iveco, Renault, MAN, DAF, Scania 3 pedal. Currently in a Iveco but will be a Volvo/Scania next (Hoping its a Volvo)
