returning from a trip one sunday i saw two 'tractors' like this working a field....one on a cultivator....the other on a drill......one was stopped and door open a man stood on footplate obviously conversing with driver

assuming the rest of the farm's kit matches.....s/p sprayer (witch does liquid fert to)...combine etc.......ground does roots (but not fen/veg) so we'll say spuds grown by third party and beet harvested by contractor,,,,,,third man is working farm manager and has wheeled tractor available

will they need a forth wheeled tractor for corn cart or use chaser into hired artics at harvest?

how many acres do they need to cover?

And who’s going to want one second hand?

Those that need them buy them new!

Second hand man at say 7-10,000hrs is gonna be terrified by the repair bills such things can generate

And I’m sure the dealer isn’t really keen on selling them either cos he knows the day the warranty expires it will be sat in his yard on borrowed money looking for a new postcode as the original owner will have swapped for new again..

3000.
Outfit near here with 2 RX plus a 30m SP, 35ft combine, 2 x 250/300hp wheeled tractors and a couple of 150hp 15 year old runabouts. 3300 acres but only combineables and vining peas.
Run their own artics as part of a grain storage business but don’t run a chaser bin despite having a couple of blocks spread about.

thank you for a sensible reply🙂

a lot of talk on here about 'no money in job' but that machinery list looks expensive to keep up even over 3300 acres?

in my example I was thinking 4000ac min🤔

There’s a couple near me. One i know is very pleased having moved from a twin track. Think i may need it to get the rest of my wheat in after last nights rain ☹️

Hunts did have one for sale, may still be on the website

Surely anyone daft enough to buy one would be working in hectares rather than acres.

And more seriously, what mess does it make in a tight turn

I suppose a lot depends on personal circumstance, staffing etc but the chap in question has no interest in shiny paint, he just runs whatever they can afford and is best for business. We are on mostly boulder clay here though, if it doesn’t get worked at the right time you might not get it drilled. Probably why several people around here have reverted back to plough and combi drill, snatching 40 acres a day while the Vaderstads are parked up.

given recent weather events I would say he's well set up for 100ac of combinable cropping maybe !!!
