My old man keeps everything! The cr#p he collects can't throw anything out .Might come in handy one day !:banghead:

sounds familiar, It’s a generation thing, I guess living through different times has ingrained this so I can understand why they are like they are in this regard

Some papers relating to land and property transfers along with partnership agreements may well be needed when a member of the business dies. Some are online if land has been registered correctly but many are not. You may be surprised how these papers can be invaluable if there is a difference of opinion over a will. Trusts and discretionary settlements may have served their purpose and been dissolved, but the trust documents may still be needed at a later date as proof. Often solicitors, with mergers etc, don’t hold hard copies of documents so you may rely on your own evidence as other copies are not “to hand “. Hard copies are often required by solicitors, so be prepared for plenty of printing should the need arise.

Removal of land tax tithes paperwork.

A friend of mine had an issue with the local community and it turned nasty, some jumped up solicitor from the village who thought they new it all found that tithes were connected to my mates land and he was going to make sure they paid every penny back dated.

Said mates elderly mum went to back of filing cabinet, dusted off an old paper - receipt that they'd bought out the land tax in the early 70's.

she should scan it so it can be found easier in the future ......... like most solicitors and banks etc do

just get some boxes and stick it in there in some order. I seem to keep the filing cabinate in order I ditch as I go along. Old files/records go into the archive box. All the boxes from the accountant stored in barn for 7 then chucked on fire.

Guys, with programs like OneDrive you can take photos or scan in documents and it will save the text and convert it into a file you can save.

If you organise OneDrive or even just your hard drive carefully you need never have a single piece of paper stored in your office again. All of my college work is saved this way. Had I been organised enough I could have avoided even writing any notes- just store the lot on OneDrive by writing them on a tablet in the classroom, saving yet more space on my study shelves because 3 lever arch files would not be sat there.

If you ever visit the offices belonging to big accounting firms you will not find many folders or arch files in these places, everything is stored electronically- where it is a LOT safer.

The reverse of this is you want something to disappear, there will be a digital footprint if its stored on computor based system. The black book has its uses.
Some things I scan, usually goverment document BCMS confirmation etc. I have been know to lose a file so really important things I keep a paper copy.

better still tell people to email you stuff and don’t generate the paper and postage in the first place

TFF is a 100%paperless business, it’s not hard to do that these days
Yep, everything arrives here digitally so no paper required.
It then duly gets printed and placed in a filing cabinet just in case. (not me)
