How much does it cost to harvest?

I have thought many times to ask them the question: how much does it cost to harvest a hectare of wheat? A simple curiosity. Here in Spain, depending on productions and size of farms of about 45 to 60 € / ha

Tomorrow I will start to harvest with my old JD 1174, I have changed all the silent blocks, to see if it does not give me many breakdowns and I save some euro

£40 - 90/ha. Highest figure for a contractor and the lowest for an old owned machine with the owner doing the servicing and repairs. No doubt there will be a few with a cheaper harvester than that!

Recon most will come back at about £30 - £35 an acre . If you a not into totally breaking down your own costs then a quick guide would be for any job just knock off 20/30% off standard contractor fees .

For how many ha? The thing is many of us have been to Spain and seen dry ripe crops left in the field for the whole of our week stay without a combine to be seen anywhere in the vicinity in weather conditions that are perfect. We simply don’t have those luxuries so we can’t rely on smaller older machines so easily. (Though most on here would think my machine is both small and old) I have looked at second hand combines in Southern Europe and they often have more hours per year on them, because they can harvest for more weeks per year. I realise that perhaps it’s not like that as much for you in the more northern part of Spain. What crop are you starting? Some people here started harvest a fortnight ago.

Each farm is a world. Here we have our own harvester (mine cost me 16,000 euros 8 years ago) because we do not have grain dryers and with more than 13% humidity they do not pick it up at the cooperative, today for example I have only harvested for 2 hours for cool weather. In the southern half of Spain, people send a hired company to harvest, because they can harvest without so many problems.

This year I only have sown winter wheat, sunflower and some fallow. I did not want to plant spring barley because of the low price and for taking advantage of cleaning weeds.

The sunflower ordered to harvest it to a big machine with appropriate head (Claas lexion 740)
