Managed to get my last 25acs of WW Monday pm, 19.5 % and they baled it yesterday but won t need a very big trailer as straw just smashed to bits. Moved 12 miles and started on last block of S Barley and did a 30 ac field [very weedy and crop very close to ground ]but picked up a stone within 10 yds of second field, broke 12 retractable tines and bent the shaft inside the auger. The dark beat us getting it out [its a real pain in the *rse to get out] but managed this morning but have to wait for new shaft so no go today ! Raining now .
So that leaves 45 acs barley, 140 beans and 70 linseed however I hope another contractor is going to do the linseed.

You've really had the devil's own bad luck this time, Oscar.

I've been driving every season since 1955, picking up many hundreds of stones in that time, mostly on various neighbours' land, but never broke more than 7 tines in one go and never bent a shaft.

Hopefully the four dry days forecast after tomorrow will not disappear again before we get there.

Presumably the straw was fudgeed ?

Guth was suggesting/hoping last week, that any talk of a straw shortage was premature. Everything that has been chopped is either not on the market, or will need replacing.

I've got enough WB straw for my needs, but I won't have any to sell this year.

Still think there will be plenty of cheap straw about @gone up the hill ?:(

Straw hasn't been cheap for several years:(

Complete madness to be chopping that straw like you did today, should have had the baler in behind the combine!

Even if straw is down 4/5 weeks it can still be salvaged, key thing to do is keep turning it over when you get the odd drying day, amazing how it dry's out in the space of a few hours and when it does come dry for 2/3 days its already 2/3rd dry.

Maybe @neilo has better things to do ... like watching paint dry

Finished here. The last 2 or 3 acres is all laid flat down hill and it's far too wet for the combine to climb the slope. Will get topped asap. The field is an absolute mess. Probably won't have the patience to try and dry and bale any of the straw, so the whole lot can meet the flails.

Problem was the wheat was for seed so was regloned straw was very green and wet when cut and has never been close to being dry. Still got another 400 acre lying on the ground to try and get bale
