Only a simple dairy farmer but can anyone tell me how much HP I need to run front mounted 5 leg subsoiler working just below plough depth with 4m power Harrow behind?
Land is light Loams through to virtually pure sand and travelling on top of ploughed furrows

I thank you

You want something like this , ,bramley do one also ,
Take it your wanting to work down maize land after ploughing

Son seems to think it’s relatively common on the continent but I must admit I can’t see it working either. Took a chuff of power to drag a shakaerator from behind

Plus how are you going to get enough traction on ploughing without compacting the wheel tracks to an incredible amount due to ballast and draft forces, creating ruts which the power harrow will then fill in after being set deeper to overcome leading to a rough field needing ploughed again to rectify?

Sharpy you run duals or big tyres and do the job right . Subsoiler on ploughing is good as you already loosened top 6/12 inch , that’s if it needs doing of course . This works well on ploughing

You don’t need as much power to push as pull , 114 and then 125 hp used to be enough to push a 3 leg one and pull a set of discs straight into rape stubles 30 years ago you can stear it the same as you can a front plough , just a case of getting front implements set right

Aye, fair enough, but my experience of subsoiling with a 5 leg was a tw25 with duals on the back and was pulling very very hard, struggling for traction on oilseed rape ground. It would not have managed on ploughing.
The implement on the front of your picture doesn't look like a subsoiler to me either, but you obviously have experience of what baldrick is looking for. Thank you.

Subsoiling on the plough works well but 5 legs over 4mts is only going to lift out slots even with wide feet. You will need to be at lest 4" deeper than your ploughing to do any good, 7 legs minimum.
Edit or are you trying to run the tines at drill centres.

That wont work
Subsoiler needs to lift out tractor tracks as a minimum
Pushing it wont work anyway

Yes ... looking to cut out a pass working down maize land. Have 350ac to drill this season so any possible savings well worthwhile

Do you intend to put slurry on this land?

If so, get someone with a tanker/injector setup to do the job. Apply your slurry and do at least one part of the cultivations first. Assuming it isn't heavily rutted or something mind.

On that acreage I would be seriously tempted to get a quadtrac or something in with a big cultivator and avoid the ploughing part.
