How much life will a million mile truck have left in it?

Hi all.

I'm pricing up a chicken feed mill and need a way if moving the feed from the mill to the sheds.

One option is a Bailey trailer with blower kit, but you're getting near £30k for an 18 tonner.

The other is a used lorry, for example:

http://www.garrett-commercials.co.uk/man-tga-32350/153

That ones done over 900k miles and is £8k, there are lots about that have done 500k miles and are about £18-23k so a fair saving on a new trailer.

Used ag trailers with blower kits seem pretty rare.

The truck would only do about 3 miles a week on farm roads, run on red diesel basically just a mobile donkey engine to blow the feed.

Could I expect big bills? I know nothing about lorries.

Just pricing the whole job up at this stage.

Just another thought. Do you know anyone local with a lorry who could come in every so often and do the job for you? Might be cheaper all round and a fixed price.

IMHO it would have half as many miles again in it before much trouble. When it dies could you not get it removed on to a tractor trailer chassis? I bet that the bodywork and blower would last for 20 years no problem

Buy the lorry as could almost buy 4 for the price of the new trailer and no constant hitching and unhitching.

Yeah there are some companies that do it but to be efficient you still need to buy in your ingredients and store them handily for the lorry to access, the only real saving is the hammer mill and feed transport which isn't the most expensive part.

Sorry, I was meaning someone with a blower lorry rather than a mill and mix unit.

if on private land all the time, then go for the 8k one, will give very little bother, might want to consider a double drive if going in fields at harvest,

biggest problem is the annual test and maintenance, but you won't need that on private land

Private land is not always as private as you think it is and some tard in hiviz won't like it. Sorry, that was a bit negative (n)

Ah ok, yeah but they would need to be in twice a week.

At the moment the plan is for the lorry/trailer to be the holding bin for the finished feed. The mill mixes up 1-2 ton batches and dumps it straight in the trailer. After 8 batches or so you take the trailer down to the shed, I envisage it milling a batch in the afternoons, one of us taking it down the shed in the morning on the way to work, blowing it in whilst doing some stockmanship and taking the lorry back to the mill at lunchtime.

There is another option, we have one of these dreadful contraptions with a new metering unit on it.

It could be possible to lengthen the drawbar on an existing trailer and make our own.

In one sense it's more sensible to use existing tractors to do the job, we have 3 so there's always one available. It's one less power unit to maintain.

Garrett would have a very good reputation. All the local hauliers deal with him for some servicing and disposing of end of life kit.
