How much luck?

But what if we all did it?? :) Who knows where it would end!

Give and take it, no set rate, just what 'feels' right on the deal and with the individual I'm dealing with.

I misunderstood the first post when I scanned it and thought the thread was about normal 'luck'. So I was reminded of the Red Dwarf episode when they discovered that 'luck' was a virus; if you caught it or were 'infected' with it you became lucky, but once your body developed a resistance to it, it went... a superb idea and one that would explain real-life very well... :).

Massive difference between hospitality and a straight up bride
Bride or bribe?!

A bribe would be something prearranged before a sale, I'll give you X amount if you buy my stock. That is not luck money.

As others have said luck is a small thank you after a sale, it's also a good time to get some feedback or ask some questions.

Good luck asking for it up here on the moor,
One year at Cutcombe calf sales, a new buyer from up country bought a lorry load of calves, upon finding no luck money in the office he proceeded to write to all the farms he bought cattle from saying it was "the norm " to give luck with every animal.
Now being the friendly lot we are up here, the market office was overwhelmed later that week with various offers of what said buyer could do with his letter :mad::facepalm:.
He may have even had a few replies:ninja::blackeye:.
Needless to say he said he's not coming back, 12months later he was back .
No letters this time though(y)
Here endith the lesson.(y)

I've never tried it personally, because I KNOW such things aren't to be taken lightly, but apparently the best way to deter a cash/luck seeking purchaser is to say, " Of course, I'll give you some luck on it, but I'm currently undergoing a tax investigation by HMRC and I'll need a signed addressed receipt for it. How much were you thinking?"

If your a dealer two pens of identical cattle but you know there's two hundred quid for one pen it doesn't take a clever dick to know which one he's going to buy esp when passing cattle on

Always get a little thank you gift at Christmas from the feed merchants etc , never a huge cash value , just a little show of appreciation for the business we have given them in the last year.

Never occurred to me before that actually they are "bribing" me.....

If this subject illustrates anything it's that if you want to see the odder side of human nature , throw money into the pot......

I bet if you were buying store cattle you wouldn't mind being bribed a bit though ;):D
I can never remember who's given me luck money in the past, when I'm buying something and it's never made any difference to how far I'd bid on anything.
Anyway getting luck money in the past is no guarantee of getting any in the future. ( I've seen a few old timers positively hurtling down the alleys after selling to avoid being asked to get their wallet out.

Why on earth would you give luck money? Does this happen in any other business? Is this why farmers are all skint?
Supermarkets or suchlike offer loyalty bonus cards, you buy more you get rewarded with something back, sounds very similar to you pay more for a store beast, breeding sheep dairy beast and you are given an appreciation in reward, car sales offer insurance incentives, services, jazz it up how you like, many industries do the same just a different wording. I generally give a tenner on single stores over 1100, 20on a bunch of say 4 @920. Appreciate what @Northeastfarmer says of not giving underbidder any, I don't but if someone has been underbidder on most my run and ends up with just a few I would give them 40 extra. Like tradition so a fan, but also you can use it to your advantage, bidding stalling on a beast say at 1150, tell auctioneer a tenner luck in the office, the underbidder will go 10 more, then 9 times out of 10 other man 10 more at a bare minimum, so normally at least you are seeing doubling your investment, where else do you get that in 2 minutes!!

I sold some store lambs, a few weeks ago, said they'd be some luck in the office. The old feckers were hunting me down straight after. I don't think they'd bought any change for a breakfast.
