How much of an issue is theft in the country compared to the city?

I read a statistic, just by a random forum poster, that crime is higher per capita in the country than the city.

I know what per capita means, per head, but I still don't see how that can be true.

According to that if you gathered 100 people from the country and 100 people from the city then you would have more people who have been victims of crime from the country than the city.

I looked up that online and couldn't find anything about that being true.

They claimed that because there are less people around then it is easier for criminals to commit crime. Couldn't just the reverse be said though that because there are less people in the country then less people to commit the crimes?

I know it doesn't mean much due to the per capita thing but anecdotally I know of and saw loads of crime while living in cities but have only heard about it now and then in the country. Massively higher concentrations of people in cities so making it likelier I would witness of hear of people who have witnessed the crimes, sure, but still, regardless of that, I would imagine there is just more crime in cities? Most hardened criminals are going to be in the cities aren't they. Not much organized crime in the country, or maybe so I think.

I know farmers have a lot of expensive equipment but it seems like it would be pretty hard to drive a tractor off unnoticed in the middle of the night? Is it more smaller things like power tools grabbable items?

It’s a lot easier to bury the bodies of the thieves in the countryside…….⛏️
From your location you would get droves of scallywags from liverpool and manchester and the surroundings.

I watched a documentary recently of a fella who murdered his wife who was apparently a north walian and he had what sounded like a chesire accent.

Can’t think of a year that I haven’t been a victim of crime (one year lost 4 quads, house burgled and sheds broken into, all different incidents) Mainly theft and odd drunk driver collision
Oh that must be very frustrating.

As @Hill Ground stated location matters in the equation quite a bit would think. Are you on the edges of larger conurbations or well into remote territory?

It is a little disconcerting to think if the latter.

3 cattle trucks (one recovered)
4 quad bikes (one recovered)
1 4 x 4 (recovered)
1 12’ IW livestock trailer
1 14’ IW drop side trailer
1 burglary
3 diesel thefts
1 attack on a 26’ steel trailer with a Toyota Corolla (driver put himself through the windscreen)
no damage to trailer
6 x sheep worrying
5 x sheep thefts
Intercepted various numerous other ongoing crimes the last being Friday night attempted quad bike theft

Hmm upon people's responses perhaps the original assertion that it is higher in the country is true?

Maybe they feel more confident getting away with stuff?

I know in cities cctv is everywhere. I guess there is a fair bit in the country too but perhaps bigger 'gaps' where they feel more confident to get away with stuff. On documentaries they are usually caught by indirect cctv on random streets and such.

It’s organised crime that’s done by a certain section of society that the police don’t touch.

The increas in Internet buying is a huge reason , the little gits get a part time job as a delivery driver and that gets them the opportunity to visit properties and find out what's about ....
...how many times do we leave a note ' please leave delivery in porch ' ......in otherwise we might as well say ' we aren't here ..help yourself'
We have tenants in the farmhouse which is half mile up the end of the lane from our house , there are 5 living there and almost everyday they will have a delivery , that means someone driving through our yard continuously.

Caught one laddie filling a bag up of milled barley one day , if I hadn't seen him do it I would never have known !

Had loads of diesel stolen out of tractors .

Our insurance fella says the same thing about delivery drivers. On Friday night for example we caught a car floating about that had dropped 2 lads off to steal a neighbours quad bike. How do they know where it’s at? I’m past a few times a day as a rule and I wouldn’t know where it’s at

They carry little battery submersible pumps , one jumps out of the van with a pump and 5 gallon drum while the van goes on with his delivery , by the time the van gets back the drum is full of diesel and he jumps back in the van . They will then pull into a lane somewhere and put the diesel in the van and repeat it.
2 were caught recently , the little pump could fill a drum in under 2 minutes!
A lot of farmers would never notice 20 litres gone from a tractor....but it adds up and particularly when a few spanners or such like have also found their way into the van .
