How often do new employees not turn up.

There are clearly big differences in culture between our countries in the way staff are rewarded and importantly taxed. Danish workers will need higher pay rates to cope with much higher taxes and higher living costs. Danish farmers tend to have other areas where they have advantages over us such as bank support (I know that has led to indebtedness-which is a whole other discussion) and some other government supports (and extra regulation). Arla and it’s farmer owners are committed to fair treatment for all our work force. Remember under Danish law we also have to have employees as Directors on our board and in our board of representatives, therefore I cannot see how Arla could realistically stand up to this union pressure, since it clearly seems to have tacit government support.

I won’t tell here what i think of how my own company handles this situation. It’s not the place.
The real problem is that the complex system that is our work system, is flawed, as most complex systems are, due to their unability to handle all eventualities fairly.
In this particular case, it puts the dairy farmers in an impossible situation one by one, so there won’t be much resistance.

The Danish way of life and how business is conducted are hugely different, which is reflected in their societal expectations. Their tax system would be considered unworkably stiff in the UK too. In some ways I admire their way of life, less corporate excess and exploitation capitalism. Their society and environment are better looked after as well. The UK could learn a thing or two from them.
