Been having loads of trouble with my mobile phone recently making calls and dropping calls despite showing full reception 4g

Hardware is newish iPhone XS and I’ve thought that was to blame but today called EE in a moment of complete rage when I had dropped about 10 calls in as many minutes

They did some tests and my SIM card is worn out - turns out I’ve had the same SIM since 2012 ! They have a efficient life of about 3 years they told me

So if you r phone performance is not great try a new SIM card

Was a new one on me

Never heard of SIMS wearing out. They become outdated, a 3G sim cannot get 4G, etc.. What I do have experience of is of EE's network dropping calls and connections. They would never admit there was a problem, but it was bad enough for me to pay a penalty to end my contract early and move to 3.

Weirdly, 3 use EE's network, but I have had no issue with lost connections. I also got fed up with the constant mid contract price hikes and shocking customer service.

Yes, have a guy that does our phones and every time we change a phone we get a new sim. Any reception trouble also involves a new sim. Apparently more than one a year incurs a 10quid charge or something.

Are you sure about that because I'm not.

It seems to me that all networks are pretty rubbish regardless of age of sim, especially so in the last few months.

I've just checked and you are correct, 3 now have their own 3G and 4G networks. But in their early days they "piggybacked", firstly with O2 then later with Orange which became EE.

Thousand?!
Not thousand, thousands! o_O We run a significant network of remote monitoring equipment domestic and international - The bulk of SIMS are communicating soil moisture probe data but we also have plenty in weather stations, irrigation controller systems, crop and insect monitoring cameras.... You wouldn't want our monthly phone bill!

Wow, that is fascinating! Thank you for explaining.

If you ever fancy doing a thread on here about it i’m sure I wouldn’t be the only one interested.

Good practise to replace them every few years. The "wearing out" may refer to the on board EEPROM memory on them degrading after (many) thousands of re-writes.

Just easiest to get the operator to send you out a fresh one, on contract renewals.

Any one know
What Virgin deals are like?
They’re fine. EE is the real network. Virgin is not as fast as EE off the same mast, but still fine generally.

I have a couple of SIMs with them on £20 a month deals that I’m letting run.

They don’t do unlimited, unless you’re a Virgin Media (cable) customer which if you’re in the sticks I’m guessing you won’t be, but they do various data rollover deals, allowing you to rollover a portion of your unused data each month.

Just depends what offer they have on st the moment. Try and get them on a “flash sale”

I don't know how old my sim is but the reception I get here is terrible. I can dial a number on 4G and then the signal just disappears, I now have to go upstairs to make a call, I used to have to go to the garden fence but now I have to go half way across a grass patch towards my cattle yards for it to work. EE by the way. I will definitely try a new sim now.
