Watching last nights scenes and the different standards applied to the BLM protests, no wonder the Nationalists are coming to the fore!
Common sense just seems to be by passed these days. What kind of society do we live in now? Can’t do this, can’t do that. I appreciate that had all the vigils gone ahead folk may have thought “it’s ok to go out an socialise now” but given the strength of feeling why didn’t they try to arrange that those women attending did so in as distanced a manner as possible. Now they have all the wrong headlines!! Come on, common sense please!

Last night's event on Clapham Common was not a random gathering. The organisers had gone to Court seeking to overturn the rules on gatherings in these Covid times.

They lost, but still allowed the event to take place.

A woman who organised a protest in Bristol against the 1% NHS pay offer was fined £10,000. The people who organised this should be subject to the same punishment.

People went to Clapham and paid their respects during the day yesterday, went home, grateful for the opportunity to do so.

As the day went on, more attended. The Police stood back, asking for people to move on after a reasonable period. Many complied. Happy balance, public pay respects.

What went wrong? People stopped complying, refused to leave. Turned against the obvious target of police present, verbal and active resistance. Now it’s become a protest, with chanting and singing. No longer a vigil, no longer Covid compliant.

What should the Police do, stand back? Allow Covid rules to be broken?
They can’t win.
Take action, get criticised. Stand back, get criticised.
This won’t bother the Met, they’ve been here a thousand times before.

Their response was necessary to control aggressive resistance of the activists present.
The media love it, the politicians wade in with absurd calls for the commissioner to quit, not wanting to be the one to go against popular opinion and support the police.
Could be the vigil have been allowed with stewarding; possibly?
Would that have stopped it becoming a protest?
We don’t know, but with the strength of feeling about women at risk coupled with the presence of activists and the target of police present, more than likely.

The Met responded on the night in a way that was proportionate to the threat they faced.

Don’t like what happened last night? Then listen to and comply with requests from law enforcement agencies.

Compare that to a perfectly peaceful, socially distanced vigil in Nottingham....same reason, no problems.

The lady being arrested and showcased by the media obv did wrong that’s what annoys me if she was abusive to officers or assaulted one then rightly should be lifted for it most trouble makers know if they provoke a reaction from officers the images will spread like wildfire and they will be portrayed as innocent victims at the hands of ruthless officers

The police attack women holding a vigil for a woman killed by a policeman. Really says a lot for the police doesn’t it.
Police are policing the silly rules.
It's a case of shooting the messenger.
If they don't clamp down on everyone, then they are in the business of deciding what subjects are permissible to protest.
You can't assemble to protest your right to assemble for instance.
Compared to other attempted protests they seem to have been exceptionally lenient.

Where were the female officers ? do they not exist in the Met force ? It should have been a totally female policed operation, then it would have passed of better for all concerned. London under its current mayor is an international disgrace.
The female officers were there observing the vigil at a distance. Once rent a mob turned up they had to call for backup.

On reflection there did appear to be an element of antagonists entering the fray last night. As others had visited during the day the attendees must have realised what they were letting themselves in for. Would have been better to photograph the event and issues big fines later.
