How to humanely kill deer that have been hit by a car

I will be having a bevvy on Thursday with a couple of local fuzz, one of whom was ARV until recently (coming up to retirement), so I'll ask what his views are on your point.

Personally, I would do the same as I do with a sheep... back of the head, or what is the skull thickness like of a deer, would a HV .22 penetrate?

If with a shotgun, where is the best place to dispatch a larger deer?

I know a couple of the local keepers on the big estates are called out if the deer is "on their land" when hit.

Had quite a long chat with my mate tonight...

His view on the matter of dispatching a fallen deer other wildlife was to use a local wher possible or a Vet. The issue with Vets, is the delay.

Whwen I asked about a local civvy doing the deed, his take was that he'd call it in, advise the Boss that a local with a firarm and ammo would do the deed. He was quite happy with that... Especially as it would reduce 2hrs paperwork from even getting the HK out of the lock box!! AND, they would chuck in the pickup!!

I’m always picking up RTA deer. Helps keep the dog food bill down, even if it does raise eyebrows among other road users.

I might be making this up but I was led to believe the police around here have a couple of specialist deer stalkers they keep on speed dial to dispatch such casualty cases? I don't think they are keen to dispatch their limited ARV's for such case... I doubt if it would be entirely safe for an officer to put a round into a deer without first moving it onto a surface more forgiving than tarmac... just look at the recent terror attack in London, one round ricocheted and went though the upper window of a double decker bus :nailbiting:

You are correct, a couple of specialists and Vats are "on the books" for such instances in West Mercia, and I think different stations will have different numbers. Here in Shropshire, I reckon there will be plenty of "locals" handy .

I did wonder on that. They don't carry a humane killer as far as I can tell either!

Even less have an FAC, unless with a specialist equine practice.

I've only ever seen one Vet shoot a horse, at a big hospital in Newmarket. He had a 007 style silencer and looked like he'd already done a hundred that week.

As mentioned above, each police force will have people with the BDS deer certificates on call for RTA deer.

A silenced .410? I didn't know such a thing existed.

Not all vets carry a humane killer. Using the old green lethal injection is hairy in my view and then you are obliged to take the thing back for incineration because you cant leave a carcass full of green juice lying around on case some moron eats it.

Who is going to pay for all the above? No one of course.

Was pricing a .410 with a moderator this year at the Game Fair. Bit steep for a whim!!

I guess onme with a 3" cartridge of No.6 at 3 ft will be like a solid slug. THe kinetic impact in the head will be a dead animal instantly.

Had a Knacker man shoot an ageing bullock with a 12b single shot, between the eyes. No.5 as I recall. Instant.

The animal welfare of such a practice is questionable at least.

A silenced 410 is best. Or a large calibre rifle for the more mobile. After that bolt gun, then it's trained dog and knife.

My uncle (retired a couple years ago) was always dead against using barbiturates for putting down large animals. Said it was only ever for the benefit of the owners who wanted to think of their beloved animal “just going to sleep”. The risk of them panicking as they lose consciousness was too high and that was dangerous.

He carried a 38 calibre pistol for that job and would rarely give in to overly emotional owners.

He was old school though and I doubt there are too many like him about now. He was also a specialist equine vet and farm vet so more used to dealing large animals and large animal owners.

This wasn't remotely funny at the time but I can see the funny/ironic side now ( one of those it could only happen to me moments) , said cat from above post had gotten really old and deaf and would lie under the car, I would start the car and wait until she realised that she had to move. One day, late for the school run I jumped into the car and not thinking slammed it into reverse, shot backwards, heard/felt a thump and saw my poor old cat shoot out from under the front of the car. Of course I was hysterical, I had that cat longer than my weans! I jumped out of the car and grabbed a towel from the house, got her into the vets and said " She is 17 years old, her jaw is obviously mangled, I do not want her poked and prodded just put her down" Ahole vet full of himself says " Let me do my job and examine her and then we shall see!" My answer to him was " Lay a hand on my cat that will prolong her pain and I will take her into the carpark and run her over again, but this time it will be quick and deadly!" Needless to say he did what was needed.
We had a similar issue when my wife's old horse went down. I had to tell the vet I was the customer and the customer is always right. Like many vets today, his concerns were driven by pound signs!

Just a question

I have never seen a captive bolt / humane killer thingy

if you have a large animal, in distress, that is flailing around - how do you get close enough or still enough to use it ?

at least with a firearm you can be a reasonable distance away, out of harms way

Sadly you don't, it has to go into shock before you can get near it and use one effectively.
