How to Tone Down a Shiny New Galvanized Gate?

We have a very smart new galvanized security gate but i would like to soften the finish and possibly go a step further and paint it black to be more suited to its surroundings. I understand that some kind of acid wash would take the shine off it significantly, possibly to the extent of leaving a palatable grey finish but still with the durability of the galvanizing to keep the gate from rusting, if so - is there any particular product which would achieve this well? Secondly, if i still want to paint it black, what's the best paint and application method to achieve an enduring smart finish that i don't have to freshen up more frequently than e.g. every 5 years? Thanks

Powder coating over the galvanising would probably achieve what you are looking for....Otherwise a couple of years should do the trick in taking the shine off it - Just look around at all the galvanised fencing along railways.

It will soften with time, or you could mix up a dilute vinegar solution and spray it on. I wouldn't want to go as far as this guy:

There are great Direct To Metal water based enamels these days that would hold up to gate usage if you want it black.

I've used the above on some garden gates, couple of years on and seems to be lasting

you need to use t wash then a acid etich primmer then a good quaitly gloss paint (y)

That's the stuff. Back when we got more grant up hre I wanted to put up a new polytunnel but the galvanizing didn't come up to spec. So they made me use T Wash to etch it, then put on a coat of glass. The T Wash puts a key on it and makes it go dull. No need for the paint except fo extra protection. Weathering for 12 months will do the same thing, but slower.
