HP laptop wont switch on

updated sons laptop today and now it wont switch back on

jeez, life can be difficult.

More info please - make, model, windows? 10?

Remove the power cord, remove the battery, press and hold the power button for at least 30 seconds - any help?

yeah as above,
plus can you get to the BIOS ?
Might have to google that.

But if you can get to BIOS, that would indicate you've not completely killed it.
Maybe just killed windows?
In which case you can normally do a return to factory settings, use google etc.

Failing that, more drastic measure maybe needed, such as a hard drive format, but going down this road should be last resort.

You didn't interrupt an update or something did you?
Windows doesn't like that.

sorry not been back sooner.
have now given it to a local IT guy, whos gone off to buy a new part to enable him to download whats on the hard drive.

Hmm, rather bizarre that an IT guy would need to 'buy a new part' to access the hard drive.
I have those sort of things in the drawer and I'm only a 'country bumpkin'

I suppose it just reminds us that we need to back up everything regularly ... automatically to a cloud system is obviously best!
