Hp officejet pro 6970

I have this multipurpose HP inkjet , which is a very good printer , but has had one fault from new . I have it on a hard wire , W. 7 pro 64 bit . It often will not go into sleep mode when I finish using it , Sometimes it does , sometimes not , and I don't know what triggers it . I normally leave it switched on all the time , but when it doesn't shut down , I switch it off manually . This is OK I suppose , but the interminable groaning and to-ing and fro-ing when I switch back on again , with cleaning phase operating , and resultant ink waste isn't good . I've tried the HP support forum , with not a lot of success . When I switched it on last time ,it came up on it's own screen with "Updating , . the latest software is installed " Still no different . Any help greatly appreciated .

Why do you want to switch it off?
I don't , I want to leave it ON and for it to go into sleep mode when not actively used . Funnily , it had actually gone into sleep mode before I used it today to print an "OFF " notice to BCMS . Back on again when I came to it tonight . It also wakes itself up at odd times of the day , for no reason that I can see . I don't suppose it's that important , it just peeves me a bit when it won't do as it should . And HP forum help line is worse than useless , they say re install the software and then go to settings to set the idling time . I've done that , and also downloaded their "snag eliminator " software which tells me there isn't a problem .
