HSE inspections

Last Autumn, our friends at the HSE bombarded everyone in this area with invitations to go to one of their ‘roadshow’ events, ahead of a round of farm inspections.

Unsurprisingly, I had better things to do with my time than sit in a warm room falling asleep in front of a projector screen:rolleyes:, so I didn’t attend one.

Roll on a few months and those farm inspections have reached the area, and i’ve Received notice of a visit next week (along with several neighbours). Has anyone had one of these visits recently (I’ve not had to be pleasant to a HSE inspector for many years)? What are they looking for, as presumably they have favourite topics just now?

Not overly concerned about his visit as I don’t employ anyone and more of a safety wuss than I ever used to be, just a bit of a bother having to spend the best part of a week hiding stuff.:sneaky::whistle:

They love telehandlers! If you have one do you have a ticket, is it maintained and annual test/service. Quad bikes have you got helmet and training, and chainsaws a big one for PPE.

Thanks.
I was having the quad bike discussion with a neighbour, who was wondering where he could get a helmet for the day. Am I right in thinking that they certainly aren’t compulsory, just ‘advised’?

Do I have to hide the telehandler too? It’s maintained and serviced (by me) and I have 30 odd years experience driving one, but no ticket. I always thought that was ‘advisory’ too, unless employing folk?

We had inspection 3 years and just happen to hire a quad in for calving time, they wouldn't allow us near the thing until we could present a safety helmet that was quad verified and possible under a certain age. I did my ticket years ago.

Ticket for handler by at least one person on site, we were told it superseded grandfather rights, I did a lantra one, years ago, lantra told me it was only valid for 5years but HSE happy with it as am in constant use of the machine since training but would advise refresh. Do you use your machine to unload lorry deliveries? If you dropped a item and it caused injury to third party would be hell up.

May be wrong but my take on it is they aren't law on the road, you see the lads on trikes without a skid lid, but should legally? have one on you while on farm.
Should really have one on all the time....

In all honesty, I have only once in my life seen anyone wearing a helmet on a quad. That was a shepherd friend that had lost his licence for drink driving and took to wearing a full face helmet for 18 months to avoid identification.
If it was law, plod would be having a field day.

Or before you let them set foot across your property threshold ask to see their specific risk assessments and method statements for their inspection of your property and insist on sight of their insurance to do so... oh hang on it’s HSE and they can do as they please....

Don't go down that road its up to you to provide an induction for them to take. If you're smart with them, they will respond the same way.

@neilo All the obvious "common sense" stuff really, helmets are compulsory here don't know about there though.
If you're a one man band they might want to know how you keep yourself safe, does anyone know where you are, do you keep your mobile with you- if you have a signal- etc.
I've always found actual HSE people to be fairly sensible (I'm sure there are exceptions) and any courses run by them to be interesting. Its company H&S reps or "consultants" that go over board with things.
It'll be interesting to see how you find it.
Good luck(y)

I'm expecting this is likely to be happening next week then....

Apparently they give you one phone call. Give me a ring and I'll see of we can raise enough on TFF to get Walterp to bail you out :depressed::depressed:

I was hoping the advice on using a quad bike helmet would be my bit of training that I could nod about, and thank him profusely for his wise words......

There's been some eye watering fines here for not wearing helmets on farm/quad bikes. Dig a little deeper into them and you find people have been caught and warned on numerous occasions but decided to stick two fingers up to them.
Only one winner then.
