I heard a snippet of news this morning on Radio 4 concerning something in todays Financial Times about the proposed trade agreement with the USA & a relaxation of standards to get the trade talks moving and in particular "agriculture ".Perhaps other forum members can put some meat on the bone on this one please !!
Woody Johnson and Liam Fox did a deal under the table yonks ago. I'm convinced of it

When are we going to learn, the UK public and government don’t care about British Ag. This is the reason I wanted to stay in Europe, so many people were passionate about things being better if we left! If this is the start of things to come it’s going to be interesting times.......

That's bending over and taking UK trousers down in preparation for a shafting. I'll bet Trump doesn't drop the tariffs he slapped on whisky, cheese & pork exports from us for the Airbus saga before Liz Truss bats her eyelashes at him at the negotiating table.

They can send as much chlorinated chicken over as long as they produce and sell a right hand drive F150 for reasonable money ;)
They can send as much chlorinated chicken over as they like, but I won't be knowingly buying or eating it.
Is the UK self sufficient in chicken meat now?
Where does the shortfall come from now?
What are the production standards of those shortfall suppliers?
If I do eat the stuff inadvertently, as in the odd KFC, I do want to know that it won't kill me anyways.

That's probably the key and possibly where they're heading. Sure, we'll take all the chlorinated chicken you like...... but it'll be labelled as such and with a health warning on the packet. The only problem is that they haven't got a grasp on how to label polish beef coming out of Ireland or foreign meat in processed foods yet so I don't hold my breath.

If a deal is done and the supermarkets can buy it, what makes you think they will? They could fill their shelves with foreign goods now but they don't.
How much more polish beef has been imported since the last lot a few weeks ago?
Is the UK self sufficient in Beef and Chicken?

I can't see how they could compete on chicken and pork to be honest, the price is so low already.

Lamb goes to the ethnic trade who prefer fresh over frozen, so can't see that market being impacted upon too much, especially as long as kosher and halal are legal in this country.

Beef farmers better buy some vaseline, as others have already stated. There's no way we can compete with their production costs.

If there is a proposal to all imported foodstuffs in produced to lower standards both of animal welfare & the environment to be allow in, then at the VERY least, we should also lower our standards in order to compete.

Bin off Red Tractor for a start.

But actually, I would far rather have UK consumers on my side buying British produced & regulated food - a food scare from imported food would be handy but the horsemeat scandal shows that cheap food wins every time

The amendments that were proposed would have ensured that anything that came in would have to be up to the same standards (on a number of parameters, such as health & welfare, etc) as that produced here. Our elected government voted those amendments down, allowing them to negotiate trade deals that allowed chlorinated chicken, hormone treated beef, etc to come in.

As far as I can tell those amendments will be presented in the Trade Bill discussions. The reason behind rushing the ag bill through is to protect sub payments. In theory with no approved bill, by the time we leave at the end of the year, means we could bd left without any sub payment from now on. Given the huge amount of cash the government has splashed on corona and the current on farm and farm gate situation I'm all for protecting the current proposal of phased reduction, versus having thd rug pulled from under us at the end of the year.

Probably a bigger worry to chicken producers in thailand as a LOT of chicken comes in from there and if america can compete with them we might have more to gain than lose on that one.
A good lot of chicken in the catering trade is from Poland so they need to be worried as well
