Hungary and Orban

Not being in the EU, that aspect's none of our business anymore* despite us having a detached but obvious interest, yet Hungary is in NATO and, under Orban, clearly isn't much of a team-player. He seems to have determined not to help Ukraine beyond the barest minimum, and not to criticise let alone penalise Russia beyond the barest minimum.

What if Russia has a go at the Baltic states, or Poland; can this fellow really now be trusted to respect Article 5?

He clearly has a lot of popularity in Hungary; perhaps it's just a generational thing, and I'd be loathe to see Hungary leave NATO, but he really needs a kick up the backside. But how, without insulting or harming the Hungarian people?

* Though I welcome comment from anyone in the EU about what they think it - meaning the EU - should or can do about Orban, if anything.

Hungary and Poland have the same problem, namely the government have their own interests at heart, not the people's. In Poland the government have undermined people's rights, the Judiciary stood up for the people, the EU sanctioned Poland to support the people and the Judiciary. The comments on here were anti EU and pro the Polish government, and I can only assume the posters didn't understand the issues, just anything anti EU must be right!
Hungary's Orban is looking to Russia to line his own pockets,, constraining the rights of the people, anti abortion , anti gay, anti human rights etc. Same as Poland.
We visited Hungary twice before covid, Budapest was clean, safe and cosmopolitan. The young under 30 ish all spoke English looked to be enjoying European life and travel etc. I think they'd fight like the Ukrainians to keep that.

Just maybe they have that way of life because they aren't fighting the Russians!

Oh but they did!
Communist rule in the People's Republic of Hungary came to an end in 1989 by a peaceful transition to a democratic system. After the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 was suppressed by Soviet forces, Hungary remained a communist country. As the Soviet Union weakened at the end of the 1980s, the Eastern bloc disintegrated

On 27 October 1991, the first entirely free Polish parliamentary elections since the 1920s took place. This completed Poland's transition from a communist party rule to a Western-style liberal democratic political system.

You might notice that both country's elect governments to the right, not the left.

This freedom is what Ukraine aspires to. Why it's fighting for its survival.

Maybe the Hungarian leadership have found a way of keeping both opposing sides Russia & the West at arms length to secure a peaceful life. Perhaps there's a valuable lesson to be learned there!

How are the "West" at arm's length when they're both EU and NATO members?
Maybe because as long as Orban is in charge Hungry is of no threat to Russia, what would happen if he was not there & the West took control doesn't bare thinking about, I was never a fan of Orban but I'm beginning to think sometimes you need a strong leader to keep the peace.
Scenes at NATO of some of the Nato leaders fawning over the Ukrainian minister can only have moved WW3 ever closer, scary times are coming I'm afraid!!

You say that, but the sight of NATO leaders fawning over Ukraine's minister sent shivers down my spine more than any of the horrifying pictures we've seen so far, you can bet Putin puts it on prime time Russian TV, there is nothing more dangerous than a cornered animal so be very careful what you wish for!

oh he found a good way under the presidency of Arpad Goncz with himself prime minister they joined Nato in 1999 . This was the first round of former Russian satellites invited.
It is sad that to maintain his place in politics that he has increasingly adopted a hard right wing line.

Maybe you are the Fxxxwit, scenes like this simply plays right into Putins hands, he can now say to his people you see I told you all along NATO were intending to come right up to our border & threaten our security, do you really not see the danger!

Fawning over him whilst sending him weapons and paying for Putin's.
Arming both sides! Maybe that's contributing to the lack of end in sight.
